Teaser: This is a poem written by a special education teacher. The poem helps readers to see the beauty inside of people with disabilities. It is a good reminder that people with disabilities are just like everyone else. They have feelings, talents, hopes and dreams.

Teaching Idea: I would read this poem to my students in order to show them a parent or teacher's perspective of having a child with a disability impact their lives. I would ask the students to listen to the poem carefully and have them write down any thoughts that come to mind while it is being recited. Then, I would ask if anyone was willing to share and use that to begin a large group discussion about similarities and differences between what students thought about or noticed about the poem.

http://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/about-children-with-disabilities-come-touch-his-cheek

Teaser: Phoebe is a young girl who has cerebral palsy, but all she wants is to be spoken to, and not like a baby. Using special devices, Phoebe tells the world about herself.

Teaching Idea: I would love to show this video to older students. I would have them first write down things that they know or think about physical disabilities. I would then show them the video. When the video is over, I would call them into a group and have a group discussion about the things that they wrote that were true and the things that they wrote that were false. I would also ask what they thought about the video and if they had any questions or comments. This will help the students to realize that there is more to a person with a physical disability that meets the eye.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CL8GMxRW_5Y

Teaser: Students with disabilities are just like you. They can act in a play, take swimming lessons and even do ballet. This video shows the capabilities of children with different disabilities and how they would like to be treated narrated by Jordan, a young man with autism.

Teaching Idea: I would show this video to my students to help them see just how similar students with disabilities are to those without. I would show this video to the class and then ask the students to share their thoughts, feeling, opinions, or ideas about the video. Did the video change anyone's perspective on students with disabilities? Then, I would split them into groups and ask them to brainstorm ways that they can help students with disabilities to feel welcome and accepted. I would have them come back into a large group and share their ideas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2PIizndq-g

Teaser: Listen to Our Stories is a website that contains songs, poems, pictures, and stories all created by people with disabilities. It showcases their talents while also giving readers a feel for what it is like to be in their shoes.

Teaching Idea: I would share this website with my students and allow them to explore it. It will help the students to get a unique look and better understanding for what it is like to have a disability. After giving them ample time, I would ask them to pick one of their favorite pieces. I will then have them journal about why they chose the piece that they did and what they got out of it.

http://www.listentoourstories.com/
