The Protagonist in this story is the main character Malencia Vale. This character is interesting because of her ability to think on her feet constantly. No matter what is thrown at her she was able to find new ways to get over the obstacle. Cia also has great confidence and was able to stay focused even when people were dying right in front of her eyes. This is what makes her such an interesting character.

Topic and Overall Theme

I believe the overall theme of this book could be a lot of things such as loyalty and survival without the help of others. Additionally, the topic is self-survival and the fact that no matter where you come from if you have the right tools, and you stay focused you can accomplish anything that stands against you..

"And then I see it. A solid snow-white line slashing across the black of the asphalt. The finish line. One last pull. I watch Tomas's feet cross the threshold and sink to the ground next to him as Dr. Barnes's smooth voice says,
"Congratulations, Malencia Vale. You and Tomas Endress have passed the fourth test." (Charbonneau 287)

The quotation relates to the Theme because it shows how much will power Cia has, and how hard she is willing to work to reach her goal. Also, this shows her ability to get over obstacles in her way no matter the circumstances and complete the goal she has in mind.
