Mordecai Anielewicz: Leader of the Resistance

Mordecai Anielewicz was born in 1919 in Wyszków, Poland. He was the leader of the Jewish resistance vs Nazis. He encouraged the construction of underground bunkers, and he created resistance groups all over Poland. He was killed on May 8, 1943 during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising when a Nazi soldier dropped a poison bomb in the bunker where he was hiding.

The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was a resistance movement that combated armed forces in the Warsaw Ghetto. It was staged when Nazis were going to deport the remaining Jews, and the ghetto ended up being liquidated.

From July to September 1942, mass deportations were carried out by Nazis and German police to the Treblinka death camp. There was another deportation attempt where a resistance was attempted, and it worked as only 6000 Jews were deported, and deportations that day were suspended.

Treblinka was one of three death camps part of Operation Reinhard which was first made to be a forced labor camp. Treblinka II was the death camp where Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto were sent to be killed.

42000 Jews were captured and sent to forced labor camps, then they were all later killed. 7000 Jews died in combat or trying to hide from the Germans. Another 7000 were captured, then deported to the Treblinka killing center. Warsaw was left in ruins. The 20,000 who survived continued to live on the Aryan side in Warsaw.
