The media is in meltdown over Caitlin Clark

In the flurry of hot takes that followed Chennedy Carter’s foul against Clark over the weekend, ESPN host Pat McAfee went on his show Monday to argue that Clark was singularly responsible for the sudden surge of WNBA popularity and therefore she should be given more respect. Of course, it’s not that the league was dormant before Clark got there, it’s that most of the mainstream press weren’t paying attention. The impact of Clark’s arrival is undeniable.

Columbia University has settled with a Jewish student who sued in late April, claiming the university failed to provide a safe environment.

It’s one of the first settlements reached as the university faces lawsuits and investigations from Jewish, Palestinian, Arab and pro-Palestinian students for allegedly failing to protect them after the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. This also heightened tensions on US college campuses.

In late April, a lawsuit from the anonymous student said that their education had been disrupted by a hostile environment on campus. This was when pro-Palestinian protesters put up encampments on Columbia’s lawn protesting Israel’s war in Gaza and also occupied Hamilton Hall, a building on campus.

Burkina Faso has been named the world’s most neglected displacement crisis by the Norwegian Refugee Council for the second year. In its annual report, the NRC said the West African country saw a record-high 707,000 new displacements in 2023, driven by escalating violence and a worsening humanitarian crisis. The report said media coverage of the displacement crisis in Burkina Faso and international political engagement with the crisis were negligible in 2023, adding that only 37% of requested humanitarian funding had been received by the country, leaving a significant gap in aid.
