Throughout this semester, I learned many things about my authorship, writing process, critical thinking and reading, information literacy, and rhetorical knowledge. I believe that I have met each learning outcome for this course and done so with efficiency and understanding. I will provide specific examples to prove how I have met and reflected on all of the learning outcomes of this semester.

For my childhood vaccination argumentative essay, I interpreted data from an infographic that represented the efficiency of vaccines among children. I also used a little less formal text, like blogs, to include first-person accounts of vaccine-hesitant parents. These approaches made my essay more reliable and impactful to a broader audience.

My culture and identity greatly influenced my reading and writing process. For example, my cultural identity places a lot of importance on healthcare, especially vaccines, so It was difficult for me to understand the opposing sides' arguments. In Mexico, specifically, people get vaccines all the time, and they're seen as very positive thing; however, in the U.S., it's a bit different. Additionally, I think my power as a privileged student with access to various media and educational resources also impacted my writing process. Since I had access to more resources, my essay was highly well-researched; however, someone with limited access to libraries and other resources might find it more difficult.

Reflect on Writing Process

A time when I received meaningful feedback on my writing was from you, Professor Hoover. In English 101, you tasked us with writing a personal narrative essay, and I think you told me something about not being afraid to write in Spanish and not including translations if I feel like they aren't necessary. Your feedback profoundly impacted me because I've never had the opportunity to write in my first language. So, when it was time for the interview essay, I chose my mother and included way more Spanish dialogue and fewer translations. I think speaking in my voice, and language elevated my essay and made it all the more emotionally personal.

I think that there are a lot of power dynamics that influence the language and communication that is used in writing. For example, people sometimes undermine and place less value on unfamiliar writings, whether it's because of language or cultural references. I've only ever been taught to write in mainstream English and not in my voice or language, so when I finally had the opportunity, I felt genuinely connected and proud of my writing.

The most helpful thing I learned from giving feedback was not to be nit-picky. Schools have always taught us that peer review is primarily based on correcting grammar and punctuation. However, to help someone elevate their writing and not discourage them, it's crucial to provide feedback that addresses their clarity, accuracy, and overall effectiveness.

I think the thinking and researching strategies I brought from my previous learning experiences really helped me this semester. For example, I learned the importance of being open-minded to other's opinions, how to analyze and interpret writings I read, and how to find credible resources efficiently. I didn't add many new strategies to my writing process for this semester because I had already learned many from your previous semester.

This semester, I also faced challenges during the reading and research process, such as finding sources from opposing opinions and reading a lot to become knowledgeable on my research topic. When trying to find sources from vaccine-hesitant views, many of these sources were censored because they spread misinformation. However, I did a little bit of digging through Reddit posts to find a couple of anti-vaccination influencers on Instagram who had posts and blogs expressing their perspectives on vaccines. Additionally, to become more knowledgeable about vaccines, I had to do a lot of research, which required a lot of reading, so to get through it all, I would mostly skim through the study or only read the abstracts.

This semester, I learned to use evidence to support my ideas by integrating quantitative and qualitative sources into my writing. For example, I used blogs, infographics, journals, books, and newspapers as sources for my childhood vaccination argumentative essay. I used the crap test to determine if my sources were appropriate forms of evidence. My evidence evaluation process involved looking at how current the source was, if it was relevant to my topic, if the author was credible, the accuracy of the source, and its purpose.

I used the APA format in my work and faced no challenges in crediting, evaluating, or integrating my sources. Overall, my citation process went smoothly; the only difficult thing about it was having to organize my sources alphabetically because it was tedious.

The most important thing I learned in this course was not to be afraid to write in my own voice. Although I might not be able to write in my own voice in future classes and work, it has taught me not to be afraid to express myself in a way that feels the most personal and vulnerable.

In my childhood vaccination argumentative essay, my position was pro-vaccine, targeting a general audience to inform and raise awareness. If I were to write this paper from another perspective, such as a mother, I would probably focus more on the emotional and personal aspects of childhood vaccination. Additionally, if my target audience was vaccine-hesitant individuals and I aimed to persuade them to become vaccine-positive, I would include my evidence on the anti-vaccination movement and debunk it.
