In 1863, President Lincoln emancipated slaves in the union. One century later, it was more than clear that further steps needed to be taken in order to truly liberate African Americans from their metaphorical shackles. All over the country, African American community organizers were garnering support for the civil rights movement. The March on Washington can be seen as the culmination of all those local efforts. People of all races broke barriers to join the movement. While the history books may exclusively celebrate the "Emancipation March," the civil rights movement started with average people coming together in good faith, opening their hearts and minds.

https://americanhistory.si.edu/exhibitions/changing-america

For much of Lincoln's presidency, he had to serve two different leadership roles. On one hand, he was the 16th president of a disjointed and fractured republic. On the other hand, he was the Commander in-Chief of that Republic's army. Both of these roles require immense leadership capabilities, and very few people throughout history have been able to serve both successfully. During the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln spoke to his soldiers and constituents alike, reminding them that America's founding principles were worth fighting for. If not for Lincoln's calm and stoic leadership, this country would have dissolved.

https://americanhistory.si.edu/exhibitions/gettysburg-address

For generations, members of the LGBTQ community were taught to hide their identity, and that being gay was something to be ashamed of. In the years since the Stonewall Riots, the LGBTQ community has flipped that notion, deciding to embrace their identity and be proud of it. The fight for equity for members of the community, especially children and teens, continues to this day. Organizations like The Trevor Project aid members of the LGBTQ community, serving as a beacon of hope for LGBTQ youths in otherwise dire situations. These service organizations are fueled by volunteers of all backgrounds who seek to make the world a safer place for members of the community.

https://americanhistory.si.edu/exhibitions/gay-history-beyond-stonewall

America is predicated on the idea that any average citizen can make a difference. Nobody embodied this idea more than one of America's first citizens, George Washington. During the brief period between the end of the Revolutionary War and the beginning of his presidency, Washington enjoyed a quiet life in Mount Vernon while still staying engaged with political issues of the time. This letter, written to a trusted associate, laments the states' unwillingness to relinquish autonomy to a strong federal government. Having seen the powerlessness of the Continental Congress, Washington favored a strong central democracy to unite and protect America. He demonstrated that private citizens should play a role in the political process, even before the United States had a government.

https://americanhistory.si.edu/documentsgallery/exhibitions/gwletter_6.html

In my opinion, the most impressive thing that humanity has ever done was visit the moon. This accomplishment was made possible by decades of small advancements in physics and aerodynamics. In turn, these advancements were fueled by research and education. Thousands of scientists unknowingly worked together, each contributing a piece of the puzzle. The moon landing inspired a wave of science fiction works, which continues to inspire new generations of STEM scholars.

https://americanhistory.si.edu/mobilizing-minds/introduction
