The Fregoli syndrome, also called as delusion of doubles, is a rare mental condition where an affected person strongly believes that the different people that he encounters are actually just a single individual in disguise. Most of the time, the patient also has this delusion that this impostor in disguise is out to kill him or her

What if your work peers, your boyfriend, your sister and your next-door neighbor were really all the same person, who was constantly altering their appearance in order to fool you? Sufferers of Fregoli delusion believe that different people in their lives are actually the same person, in disguise using costumes to trick them. Often this belief is of a paranoid nature with the delusional person believing that they are being persecuted by the person whom they believe to be following them (InfoBarrel, 2018).

The condition is named after the Italian actor Leopold Fregoli who was renowned for his ability to make quick changes of appearance during his stage act. It was first reported 1927 by two psychiatrists who discussed the case study of a 27 year old woman who believed that she was being persecuted by two actors whom she often went to see at the theatre . She believed that these people “pursued her closely, taking the form of people she knows or meets.”

Treatment of the syndrome mainly involves pharmacotherapy through antipsychotic, antidepressant, and anticonvulsant drugs. Trifluoperazine is a typical antipsychotic used for treatment of Fregoli. This drug is usually given if other signs of psychological orders are present with the syndrome. The treatment for Fregoli may not be very successful but they have proven to be effective in preventing more symptoms to occur (InfoBarrel, 2018)
