"Theirs is the banner in my hand. And I wish I had the power to tell them that the despair of their hearts was not to be final, and their night was not without hope," (Rand 103).

This quote is important because there is always hope left, even if it doesn't seem like it. It doesn't seem like there is much hope for the society that takes place in Anthem, but Equality has proven otherwise that change is still possible and still realistic. He hopes to return to the society to help them, and to save his friends and fight for freedom. This can apply to real life too. Never give up.

This quote is crucial to the novel in the way that Equality used to trust anyone and love everyone no matter what they did to him. He know thinks that everyone deserves love, but you have to earn it. Honor also must earned. Now that Equality thinks this, he is more careful about who he trusts and who he claims is close to him. It advances the novel by helping Equality find individuality.
