There is a part of the chapter where montage remembers one of his cousin's tricking him by offering him a dime if he could fill a sieve with sand. This deal his cousin made with Montage was unfair because sand goes straight through a sieve and Montage remembers that the faster he would put the sand in, the faster the sand would come out of the sieve. The reason montage thinks of this memory is because on his way to faber's house he keeps being interrupted by the denham's dentifrice advertisement so he stars to read faster and faster but then realizes that the faster he reads the more information that he is missing, similar to the sieve and the sand.
