Many ideas spoke to me how my contributions will serve others and myself. Making decisions that will help me make my life what I want it to be. I have a deep sense of responsibility to my family, my colleagues, and students. That was my original mission statement when I started teaching. I agree, it is time to think about what legacy and the meaning deep down within ourselves. A new kind of commitment.

It's important to pause and remember that in our daily interactions to get back to our "why" of what we do.
I like the idea of a mission statement being a fluid document. My 10 year old mission statement, would be vastly than my 18 year old one, and my 25, and my 34... Sara, I also noticed that people wrote about what people will say about us. While we encourage kids not to judge others, and not worry about what others think of them, in the end it does matter to us all.

I believe, like Julie Van Tol, that my mission statement may take a lot of rewrites. How do you put into words all you want to do for your students, peers, and loved ones? This quote really rings true for me, because I chose a mid-career change in order to pursue teaching art. I literally "detected" what strengths and passions I had (art & sharing it with others) in order to change my life for the better. I knew if I was going to go to work every day, I needed to be in a career that I truly loved, and I didn't want to "invent" an interest or let anything deter me from following my passion. I believe if EVERYONE in the world was honest with themselves and followed his/her passion they would live happier, more fulfilled lives (and would be kinder to others as well).
