My journey through COVID-19 Pandemic

It was early 2020, and the world began changing. Life has always been full of outdoor activities and vibrant community gatherings in Batangas, so things went quiet suddenly. News about COVID-19 spread like wildfire, but it didn't take very long before the government announced lockdown. Uncertainty is the word, and like so many others, my family and I had to adjust to this new reality. At first, it was hard to grasp the magnitude of what was happening. The bustling life we knew, from the market trips to the lively beach days, was replaced with empty streets and an eerie stillness. I, like many, had to stay at home, and school and work transitioned to online platforms. The social distancing kept us far from some friends and extended members of our families, but it somehow put us up closer with the people we live with: my brothers and sisters.Days merged into weeks, and then to months. Our patterns were altered, but we still managed to cope with each other's presence. Without the distractions that usually steer us away from each other, we were able to reconnect in ways we hadn't before. We spent a lot of our time playing games – video games, board games, card games, you name it. It became a daily ritual that made days more bearable. We would laugh at silly moments in our favorite games, teaming up and conquering virtual worlds. It wasn't always so much about winning or losing but the fun, creating memories for us to hold in the own personal time we found together. The games were an escape, giving us some sense of normalcy in a world seemingly turned upside down.Lockdown also developed habits in me that helped me get through the gloomy period. I became healthier, both in body and mind. Each day, I'd take walks around the neighborhood with a safe distance between myself and other people so that I could still enjoy the fresh breeze. We'd gather at night in the living room and share stories, planning our trips to the beach when everything was over.I remember that evening after marathon play, we sat on the balcony facing the hills of Batangas. The air was cool enough, and for a brief moment, everything looked like it could be okay again. The pandemic had brought us closer together, and despite the tough moments, we found joy in the small things.

Unexpected Lessons in Life's Darkest Moments

During the pandemic, my Grade 9 year turned into a tough journey filled with anxiety and uncertainty. It felt like I was buried under piles of schoolwork, with countless modules to complete and deadlines closing in fast. The switch to modular learning left me feeling lost, as I struggled to understand the materials without the usual support from teachers and classmates. At home, worries about family added even more stress, making it hard to focus on anything but the weight of everything going on around me. There were days when I felt completely overwhelmed and wanted to give up on it all. But deep down, I knew that I had to keep pushing forward. I gradually learned to break my tasks into smaller, manageable pieces, reminding myself that every little effort I put in matters. With the support of my family and my growing determination, I started to organize my life better, setting small goals that helped me move in the right direction. Each day, I became a little more focused and motivated, rediscovering my strength along the way. After months of hard work and persistence, I was not only able to finish the school year, but I also earned a medal as a symbol of my dedication. Looking back, I realize how much I grew during this challenging time. So, I can say that this was an unforgettable experience because it gave me lessons to become stronger in life. To all the students out there feeling overwhelmed, remember that even during the hardest times, your strength can help you succeed. Every small step you take brings you closer to your goals, and with determination and a little patience, you can overcome any obstacle that life throws your way.

During the pandemic, one moment I will never forget is my birthday. On that special day, my family and close friends celebrated together in a simple but meaningful way. I was truly happy because, after the celebration, my siblings and I went to the mall to buy some gifts for me.

But the most exciting part of my birthday was when I and my siblings laughed, cried, shared our memories, thoughts, and plans in our lives, and shared some advice. After that, we went back home to end my celebration, and that’s my unforgettable memories during the pandemic.

The most unforgettable experience I had during the pandemic was when my older sister and grandmother had COVID-19. The news hit me like a bolt of lightning from a clear sky, instantly filling my heart with fear and anxiety. I can't describe the intense worry I felt, the constant thoughts about their condition, and the inability to be with them and care for them. Every call and update was a mixture of hope and fear, as I waited for good news about their recovery. The nights were filled with sleepless worry, and the days seemed to crawl by as I waited for any sign of change in their condition. I still remember crying secretly, praying for their speedy recovery, and finding strength in the people who loved me. This experience taught me many things—the importance of family, humility in the face of adversity, and the importance of self-care and caring for loved ones. I also learned to appreciate simple things that I previously took for granted, like eating meals with my family or a simple hug. To this day, those days remain vivid in my memory, a reminder of life's fragility and the importance of cherishing every moment with family. It was an experience that left a deep mark on me, an experience I will never forget. I became stronger, more resilient, and more grateful for the blessings I had.

The Shadows of Pandemic

When COVID-19 started, I was happy that there would be no classes, but as time passed, I realized it was lasting longer than expected. A lot changed during that time, including myself. From being a girl who was very motivated and happy to do everything, I became a quiet kid. One of the reasons was our move to Batangas City. Imagine studying in a modular class with no friends or even a single familiar face. It was harder for me to study in a place I barely knew, especially with my situation. I went from being a top student to a lower-performing one. I received a grade I never expected in my entire life. The pandemic had a huge impact on me, on my entire being. I experienced depression, which led to a change in my behavior. I was no longer the happy one. I started hating myself because of it.

Before, I was happy that we were starting over in a new city, but realizing that it wasn't easy during the pandemic made me feel so weak. Imagine having no one to talk to about your problems, with only yourself to rely on. After that, I promised myself that once this pandemic ended, I would make it up to myself and to those who had high expectations of me. The pandemic taught me a lot. You won’t always be okay, and you won’t always be the person others expect you to be. Learn to be yourself and love yourself.
