The idea of Manifest Destiny was created by Journalist John L. O'Sullivan as he was describing the American journey moving west. The term took hold and soon most Americans believed it was their right and destiny to expand into the "unsettled" territories. This event led to the Civil War because this idea made people explore new lands and take over them, so people then had to decide whether to allow slavery or not.

Due to the Slave Trade Clause in the Constitution, Congress could ban the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade for 20 years. So in 1807, with a population of over 4 million enslaved people in the South, a few Southern Congressmen joined the Northern Congressmen in abolishing the African Slave Trade. The act became effective on January 1, 1808. This was a key event because now no more slaves were being transported into the U.S. and we just had the slaves that were already here.

The Missouri Compromise was created to settle the debate in Congress over slave and free states. The compromise stated that Missouri would be added as a slave state while Maine (which was currently part of Massachusetts) would become a free state. An invisible line would also be drawn across the Louisiana Territory. New states added above the line would be part of the North, and free states, while states added below the line would become part of the South, and the slave states. The North was worried about any more new territory becoming a slavery territory and vice versa for the South. So they both wanted all the territories to be on their side which just increased problems.

In 1846, a war with Mexico broke out, and even though we won, Congress still had to decide whether to allow slavery in the new land. Both the North and the South wanted the land to be part of their side. The compromise stated that California would be added as a free state and the slave trade in Washington D.C. would end. For the South, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed and made it easier for slave owners to find and take back the enslaved people that ran away from them. The territory won from the Mexican War was divided into two territories - New Mexico and Utah - both would decide whether to allow slavery or not by popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty just increased the violence in states since not everyone wanted slavery or not everyone wanted to be a free state. This violence eventually split the country with our Civil War.

In 1854, Senator Stephen Douglas proposed dividing the land into two areas - Kansas and Nebraska - and the two states would decide whether to allow slavery or not by popular sovereignty. When the act was passed, lots of pro and anti-slavery settlers rushed into Kansas to make their voices heard about their positions on slavery. In doing so, two governments were set up, one pro-slavery and one anti-slavery. Because of the violence that broke out between the two sides, Kansas became known as bleeding Kansas. On May 21, 1856, over 700 pro-slavery "border ruffians" attacked the anti-slavery town of Lawrence. This made tensions between the South and North grow until they just decided to split and it led to the Civil War.

The cotton gin was really important because it increased the demand for enslaved people. It is a machine that quickly and easily separates cotton fibers from the seeds.

After Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory, he needed someone to go explore it and see what is inside. He assembled an expedition to explore and document the new land. Leading the expedition were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Starting at St. Charles, Missouri on May 14, 1804 they traveled west, following the Missouri River and documenting all that they found. Over the span of two years, they traveled more than 8,000 miles from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean and back. The purpose of this journey was to find a waterway that leads to the Pacific (which doesn't exist), document all of the animals and plants found along the way, and establish peaceful connections with the natives in the area.
This event led to the Civil War because the North and the South both fought over whether the land would have slavery or not slavery. It was also the land that the Missouri Compromise was created for.
