Maitena Van Houtte
I choose this picture because I really like the lighter and darker shade contrast between the woman and the background, How the use of lighting makes you focus on her face and transmits a strong feeling to the audience. I also like how the background tries to make a smoky-like effect, also really iconic in the Film Noir style.

I love the silhouette of the woman in the dark and how one side of her face is brightly lit, while the other side is completely black. And not to mention the smoke in the photo, which I really like along with the little light that comes out of the local. I think that the high contrast and low key lighting makes a really interesting look in the photo.

I love picture 6, from The Big Combo, because the lighting and the shadows are so gorgeously done that we get two well-defined silhouettes of the characters. The smoke adds a mysterious feeling and the man, who is closer to it, is kind of vanishing inside it, so we appreciate a hole story. I also think it’s a great example of film noir because of its high contrast and some mystery.

In reality it's just a man, whose features are hardly seen since there isn't very good lighting, who is coming down the stairs, but at the same time he has a really big shadow that covers half of the stairs railing, as if it disappeared, and the smoke that can be seen adds a sense of mystery to it.

I've chosen this still from Night of The Hunter (1955) because I love how it blends noir cinematography with a use of shadows similar to those of German Expressionism. Even if Robert Mitchum's character doesn't take much of the frame, his place in said frame is what gives him presence and character, his shadow looming across the stairs gives the impression of him being larger than life, almost supernatural. Its almost like he IS the shadow, represented by the fact he's mostly covered in darkness, with the heavy light shining behind him. The hat also makes his character even more interesting, not only as a characteristic, but also growing his aura of mystery even more, obscuring his face.

You can tell the light is positioned above the actors and a bit to the front. I also like effect of the blurry background that makes the characters stand out.

The beautiful shapes of the plants and the blinds morphing with the woman who is very much the protagonist of this scene thanks to the upper contrast of the shadows that helps for the background not to distract you from the subject are absolutely gorgeous, and yet quite simple.
