Our narrator starts us off by explaining that he is doing a sin by writing in this tunnel that he found. He is a curious man who just wants to learn and figure out the past of the society he lives in. He is very intelligent, but is held back due to being a street sweeper. In his tunnel, Equality and his friend International come across electricity, and Equality wants to share this finding with the Council. Later, he escapes the madness and goes into a forest where his secret lover follows him. They soon find a house and plan out their lives together.

1) Identity: Identity keeps a person from being their true self. Identity is lost through a dystopian society.
Evidence: The society does not know the word "I" so they do not know what they look like and who they really are.
2) Love: Love forces people to do actions that they would not otherwise. Love is powerful enough to complete a society or not.
Evidence: If The Golden One was not influencing Equality, he would not have gone out of his way to fight for what he believed in.

3) Loyalty: Loyalty is the ultimate way to gain someone’s trust. Without loyalty, friendship and love is basically nothing.
Evidence: International is loyal to Equality for not telling him the secret of the tunnel. This leads to Equality wanting to go back to the society to save him and his loyal friends.

4) Freedom: Freedom is the easiest way for one to be happy. Without freedom, people feel lost in their own skin.
Evidence: As soon as Equality gets out of the city and into the forest, he immediately is a happier man with no worries.

5) Power: Power controls people and their actions. Power consumes the mind of people and makes them do things that seem self-centered, but in reality his helping them self.
Evidence: When Equality realizes he has power due to the light box, he uses it to his advantage and goes to the council to help them out and teach them about his discovery. Their power overthrows him which makes him flee into the forest.

Light is what brings truth to Anthem. Equality changes his name to Prometheus, the bringer of light, and Liberty is known as the Golden One. Equality's thought of the light bulb could improve the society very well, but it gets shut down in the dark city. The house in the forest lets in sunlight from windows. Light illuminates life in someone which Equality shows throughout the entire book.

Ayn Rand shows the struggle of a person who is trying to find himself through his own skin. Anthem really puts what being an outsider in a popular world you don't believe you fit into feels like.

I really liked how Equality pursued his dreams in being a Scholar even when becoming a street sweeper. He would do his duty of sweeping streets but would still set time aside to learn about what he loved, very inspirational. I have always loved stories where the protagonist goes against the law because they know it is for a good cause, and that is just what this story is about. I also loved how foreshadowing played into the story. You hear about the Uncharted Forest in the beginning of the story, but by the end Equality and Liberty are both living inside the forest.

The one thing I did not like was the story is telling you as in individual to not let other people do stuff for you, but Liberty does not do much for herself. Yes, she went to the forest with Equality because she knew that was the good thing to do, but Equality picks her new name, and she follows him around like a pet dog to their owner.
