American Federal Party: This particular political party was led Luis Muñoz Rivera. While this party supported statehood for the island of Puerto Rico, its supporters consisted of hacendados and a myriad of others who had many agricultural interest. This party supported statehood as it was a way to ensure free trade with the US.

Puerto Rican Republican Party: José Celso Barbosa led this political party. This party consisted of great diversity as they attracted merchants, farmers, professionals, artisans, lawyers, physicians, and laborers. The party was driven by the belief that a closer relationship with the United States would help modernize Puerto Rico. They also accepted the idea of having to undergo assimilation before it having the opportunity to govern on its own.

The Union Party of Puerto Rico: This political party was formerly known as the Federal Party and was led by Luis Muñoz Rivera. A group of republicans soon joined, who were headed by Rosendo Matienzo Cintrón. Most of the members of this party were in favor of autonomy. Independentistas also joined and thus most had a shared goal of avoiding annexation.

The Independence Party: This particular political party was founded by independentistas, most notably: Rosendo Matienzo Cintrón, Manuel Zena Gandia, and Luis Lloréns Torres. It was founded in 1912, and did not last too long, but differentiated itself as it was the first party of the 20th century to propose independence as a solution to the islands colonial struggles.

The idea of Autonomism was to achieve, amongst other things, individual, economic, and political freedoms in Puerto Rico.
