The article "California public school enrollment continues decline, still reeling form pandemic plunge," discusses the enrollment at California schools that continues to decrease, apparently failing to recover from  the pandemic's drop. However, student enrollment has started to stabilize in seventh and kindergarten rates. Due to these enrollment drops, districts have to lay off workers and stop programs, or even closing altogether. In LAUSD, the state's largest school district has enough money to offer raises to their staff, but due to enrollment, have to decide what schools to shut down. This decline in students falls in line with the decreasing population of California due to the ongoing mass exodus out of the state. Many students and adults have reasons for dropping out or moving away, such as job opportunities to support their families, private enrollment, charter enrollment. These disruptions of schools are having ripple effects on both students and teaches due to the decreasing opportunities. 

While reading the article I realised that the issue of attendance is the cause behind many gutted programs and difficulty of hire. Our school has not had a math teacher in over a year, leading many kids to suffer under the lack of tutelage as the online learning platforms fail to educate up to standard. I'm worried about our already-small school, especially since we're under review this year. If we get shut down, what will happen to the newspaper? It would become one of the many casualties of the decreased attendance. In the article "Fox Will Pay $785.5 Million to Settle Defamation Suit" by Jeremy W. Peters and Katie Robinson Fox news was announced to have abruptly agreed to pay almost 800 million dollars to resolve a defamation suit. This suit was filed by Dominion Voting Systems over the network's prominent promotion of misinformation on its platform. This is one of the largest settlements over a defamation case and occured when a courtroom was already packed to begin the trial. The cause for this lawsuit was due to the misinformation FOX had peddled over the 2020 elections, where it accused the Dominion Voting Systems to be fraudulent in favour for Biden. Following the settlement, Dominion revealed correspondance between FOX employees that showed that even their own employees did not believe what they spoke, bashing the Trump administration they had publically backed as "crazy". Had the trial commenced, it would be more harmful for FOX than Dominion, with Rupert Murdoch, owner of FOX own admission that his own deposition was poor.

My opinion of "Fox Will Pay $785.5 Million to Settle Defamation Suit," is incredibly joyous. I'm incredibly happy that not only is such a disgusting company finally able to see some repercussion for the incredible damages to the trust in American Democracy, public health, voting rights and progressive policies it had done. The only thing I'm upset about is the fact that we won't be able to see the company crash and burn even further in a lawsuit that would've, frankly and crudely, been a dumpster-fire for them. Not only has this company upheld bigoted old belief points and spewed racist and vile things out of its showhost's mouths, but it was all a grift for them in order to peddle more money.  FOX is a company that exudes bigotry everytime Laura Inghram or Tucker Carlson - who thankfully is at least one germ off the table -- would come on for the night to poach the fire they set off even more. If anything, they are part of the problem for what happened on Jan. 6, as they've been the ones encouraging conservative viewpoints that quickly nosedived into an alt-right problem. In the article "A 4.0 student beat all the odds. But he can't afford a UC campus," by Teresa Watanabe, the focus lies on Jonathan Cornejo, senior at West Adams Prepatory High School. Despite his college acceptances, he chose community college instead, because he could not afford college costs - much like many children across the UC college system. Many students are choosing cheaper or lesser colleges instead due to not wanting to pick financial strain over their well-being. In fact, so many poor students are dropping out of UC, or not going there at all, that students with the Pell grant dropped from 42% in fall of 2012, to 33% in the fall of 2022. UC data has begun to show that far more low-income students are starting to pick community college or CSU over its academic program. The fall in admissions is in line with the general exodus out of California, because rising housing costs and inflation have made it all but impossible or unpleasant to be living in the state. It's also parents who push their kids to not take on the financial loan burden, worried that they and their children would not be able to pay off the loan, even if financial protection only makes them pay 3,000 in tuition a year. To combat all of this, the UC is stepping up its financial aid, raising tuition for undergraduates and setting aside 45% of its revenue for financial aid.

My opinion of the article, "A 4.0 student beat all the odds. But he can't afford a UC campus," is that all of this would be resolved if college tuition was free or severely made more affordable. While he received financial grants that severely decreased the amount he had to pay, he still couldn't afford to cover it. If public upper education in this country didn't have to have a cost, then things would be different. The government made community college free in the LA area, they could make college free elsewhere. Also, student debt has been paused up into this year. It does not need to be a problem, and many poor people are choosing worse futures for themselves just because of the lives they were born into, while rich kids can just nepotism their way into good schools, their silver spoon practically still glued onto their tongue. It's unfair and maddening that good students like Jonathan Cornejo, a 4.0 student, cannot see immediate success because his family can't cover him. Though I think the infographics in the middle could've been smaller to give the story's text some breathing room, I find that the overall composition works really well. The image faces the story, naturally drawing your eye to the right of it and straight towards the inforgrapihics. Then, you go back up to read the story. I like the creative use of post-it notes to add in a pop of colour, and the large image on the left makes it eye catching. However, I think that the font could have been more interesting, the way our magazine's is - but I just also dislike Arial family fonts, so I am biased in that regard. Once again, the QR codes make their appereance, something we absolutely need to add to our magazine's pages in  order to draw  more readers from the print to the web . Twenty minutes after the Cannes Film Festival news conference for “Jeanne du Barry” was supposed to begin on Wednesday, neither the film’s actress-director, Maïwenn, nor her lead actor, Johnny Depp, had actually shown up.

Were they hoping to avoid questions? For Maïwenn, who was accused of spitting on a journalist in February, and Depp, who recently won a defamation suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard after she made allegations of physical and sexual abuse, queries about their personal scandals could overwhelm all talk of the movie they were meant to promote. Both had been in attendance the previous night when “Jeanne du Barry” opened the festival, but Cannes premieres are famously fawning and conclude with a customary standing ovation. Meeting the press would be a whole different matter.

To my understanding, multiple choice exams are not even a good way of quizzing students, all that they are is just segments of a memorization test rather than actual skill-based examination.
