The burning of sugar cane happens every year in october to march. About 400,000 acres of sugarcane fields are burned. To this day even though the town is affected still they still burn it. They do this before the stalks are cut to eliminate the outer leaves of sugar cane and it reduces the cost. The black and low-income community start to develop asthma as well as other respiratory and immune system illnesses. This has gotten so bad that people start to debate if they should even leave there house or not. They don't want ash getting on there clothes or even worse into there lungs.
