Slavery formed one of the largest sectional issues between the North and South. After independence, Southerners bristled defensively in favor of slavery. They condemned parliamentary taxation as "political slavery," while enslaved African Americans carried the southern economy on their backs.
Backwards as it is, many Southerners believed that owning slaves as their personal property represented liberty and American values. Southerners essentially viewed the end of slavery as a violation of their rights and the end of their stable economy; to them, this right grew more volatile every day.
Of course, as Southern unity grew, the disputes over the Northwest Territory didn't help the issue of sectionalism in the colonies.

Sectionalism evolves from disputes between Northern and Southern States. One major dispute were the rights to Western land claims, specifically the Northwest Territory. This land consisted of present day Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Congress adopted 3 ordinances in order to divide and establish the new land. The first 2 ordinances described how these states will be added to the Union and how its land is divided. The main ordinance was the Northwest Ordinance which described the government and fundamental laws established in the new land. Another main dispute between the North and South came with the liberation of slaves. In the Northwest Ordinance, slavery was abolished in the new states, essentially adding states to the North's side. Northwest Ordinance extended the republican government to the West.

This increase of division of views between the North and South eventually led to a long period of turmoil in the newly founded United States. The disparity of opinions lead to the unification of northern states vs the coalition formed in the south and eventually leads to the civil war. A third area also arises within the United States: the West. Another result of sectionalism is the Missouri Compromise, the admission of a slave state(Missouri) and a free state(Maine). Almost immediately, this sectionalism formed a political power struggle in congress and lead to the formation of political parties.

While the South viewed slavery as indispensable to their economy, the North didn't revolve around cotton. Rather, merchants, artisans, and urban citizens viewed slavery as an unnecessary (and later negative) component of American life. The Northern economy simply didn't require such a large manual labor force, and as time passed, abolitionist followings grew in disgust of the Southern system. In a certain sense, the strong contrast between the Northern and Southern colonies created a direct split between political views such as taxation, control of trade, and of course, slavery; Furthermore, the Northwest Territory became cause for debate: who would get the land, and if so, what laws would be established? Soon enough, slavery as well as political differentiation created a strong Northern attitude, and in turn, strong sectionalism.
