In the novel Bennie is very self motivated to pursue her dream of being a doctor. Asagai: "For a woman it should be enough." Beneatha: " I know – because that’s what it says in all the novels that men write. But it isn’t. Go ahead and laugh – but I’m not interested in being someone’s little episode in America or – (With feminine vengeance) – one of them!" In the text Bennie says that even though people tell her what she should be or what she should be happy with she still stands her ground for what she wants. Bennie doesn't want to be a house wife who watches over the kids and only speaks when spoken to. Bennie wants to create her own life and become a doctor, and with that determination she will most likely succeed.

Another trait from Bennie is that she is very forward thinking. Beneatha: “Get over it? What are you talking about, Ruth? Listen, I’m going to be a doctor. I’m not worried about who I’m going to marry yet – IF I ever get married.” The idea of being a woman and not being married was very out of the ordinary. Bennie being very forward thinking and having the thought of not needing men in her life.

In my personal opinion I think I can relate to Bennie. Not wanting to do all the things everyone else wants me to do. I think she's a very good person in how she always wants to help people and become a doctor. I also think that once she finishes med school and becomes a doctor she's going to help a lot of people.

In my opinion I think this kind of relates to the character Bennie because becoming one of the first woman doctors can be pretty stressful. Having different opinions from everyone else can be pretty conflicting as well. Should she stay on her career path of wanting to become a doctor, or should she just do what every other woman would do.

I think a theme in the movie is not giving up about achieving dreams. In the text Walter says to his son "You wouldn’t understand yet, son, but your daddy’s gonna make a transaction . . . a business transaction that’s going to change our lives." Walter has a dream to get a house and to create a good life for his family and it shows in the text.
