Dark Matter is what scientists believe to be the reason why our universe is the way it is. Although we do not know much about dark matter, one thing we do know is that dark matter has an effect on the expansion of our universe. Dark matter takes up about 85% of our universe leaving only 15% to be normal matter. Dark matter is so far undetectable. It does not reflect light like other normal matter. In other words, it does not physically exist. The idea of dark matter appeared in the 1600s shortly after Isaac Newton’s discovery of gravity. Some scientists speculated that there could be masses in space that affect the way stars and planets move due to its gravitational pull.

Dark matter acts upon everything in our universe. At this very moment dark matter is passing through your body. There are many different ways that scientists are trying to detect dark matter. They are building devices deep underground with the hope that maybe a particle of dark matter will pass through a more dense mass, leaving a trace of its presence. Other ways that we are looking for signs of dark matter are with telescopes in space.
