Islam celebrates many events to commemorate happenings in the holy book, The Quran. The following text contains three of the most well known celebrations in the Islamic culture.

Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. For Muslims worldwide, this is the month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad.

The traditional practices of Ramadan are:

Breaking the daily fast with a drink of water and dates. The main meal is to follow after dusk prayers.

Reading the entire Quran during Ramadan

Acts of charity

Offering additional prayers in the early morning and at night in the home or in a congregation at the mosque.

Social visits are encouraged, especially visiting the sick and elderly.

The celebration of Eid al-Fitr commemorates the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

Muslims must do the following throughout Eid al-Fitr:

Attend Eid prayers in the morning

Visiting family, friends, neighbors, the sick and elderly

Enjoying festive meals such as Biryani (spicy rice), Haleem (a slow-cooked of meat and lenilts), Nehari (A slow-cooked stew made of beef or lamb) and Ras Malai (Sweet cheese dumplings soaked in chilled cardamon)

Modest gift-giving especially to children

Obliged to pay a prescribed amount of money to the poor and disadvantaged

Eid al-Adha is also known as a "Sacrifice Feast" and is one of the two major Islamic Eid holidays and is considered the holier of the two. Eid al-Adha commemorates the sacrifice of Abraham of his son.

During Eid al-Adha, Muslims partake in the following:

Dressing up in new clothes and attend prayers at a local mosque.

Sharing food and gifts with family and friends.

Muslims often slaughter a sheep, goat, cow or a camel to complete a re-enactment of the sacrifice of Abraham.

They give a third of the slaughtered meat to the poor, a third to family and the final third is to be kept for the household as a gesture of parting with something precious.
