"Signs of life were visible now on the beach." (pg.18)
Characterization: The beach is being characterized as a "base" in this quote because of the fact that this is where the boys first start to appear and gather together.
Symbolism: This symbolizes the way life may seem scarce but at points one has to look deeper and they may see more than appears.
Theme: Power and control begin to appear in this quote because Ralph is the one who holds the power by using the conch and being the one to gather other boys together and having the control to bring them together.
Setting: This quote takes place shortly after Ralph blows on the conch to call upon other lost boys on the island, as Piggy suggested. The boys were gathering around on the beach where Ralph and Piggy stood.

"The children gave him the same simple obedience that they had given to men with megaphones." (pg.31)
Characterization: This characterizes the kids as obedient and Ralph as a leader because he is given a sense of authority and importance.

Symbolism: This quote conveys one aspect of humanity and how people can be compliant in certain situations.

Theme: This quote also shows a sense of power and control over the other children due to the use of "obedience". People are often obedient to people who have power or a sense of authority over them.

Setting: Because of the use of the word "megaphone" We know that the children are all gathered in one place on the island in an area close enough together like an assembly so they can listen to Ralph.

"They found a piglet caught in a curtian of creepers, throwing itself at the elastic traces in all the madness of extreme terrror." (pg. 31)
Characterization: This is characterizing the island rather than one of the kids. It is showing us the darker and more mysterious side of the island that scares the children.

Symbolism: This shows the fear humans feel over the simplest things. Plants can be frightening to someone if they are not paying attention and are caught off guard. It seems silly but it happens. We fear what we dont undersand.

Theme: This is the play into fear. Words like "terror" and "madness" and the plants described as "creepers" play into this factor. The are strong words used for a purpose and that purpose was to show the reader the fear the children feel as well as the darker aspects of the island.

Setting: This quote takes place when Ralph Jack and Simon are coming back down the mountain after exploring. They are walking through the vegetation and "creepers".

"Life became a race with the fire and the boys scattered through the upper forest."(pg. 41)
Characterization: This quote characterizes Ralph as the big leader again because of the way he is grabs and uses Piggy's glasses, but also shows how Jack may be the one who also gives the ideas because he is the one that suggests the idea of using the glasses. Although this proves Piggy being the weakest one of the group by the way they treat him, and the way he doesn't defend himself against the other boys.
Symbolism: This quote symbolizes that these boys are living on a time based island. There life's are against the island in a race of time and safety, because of the fact that they can start one good thing but they never know when it'll stop and they won't have that anymore. This quote is saying the boys may run out of time no matter how far or fast they keep on running to keep the good up.
Theme: The theme of this quote show the fear the boys carry for their life's against the island. The way the boys scatter up the forest shows how afraid they are in order to see if they'll have time to gather more wood for their fire to continue going through the night. Also this quote shows the power and control they try to contain as a group, once they start the fire they feel as though they have power on the island and are finding a way to keep and control that power of starting a fire. Scatter in this sentence is being used to show how quickly they try to move to keep their power and control it against the odds of living on the island.
Setting: This quote takes place on the mountain around the forest, when the boys are trying to start a fire using Piggy's glasses

"We've got to have special people for looking after the fire."(pg.42)
Characterization: Ralph and Jack are characterized as the ones becoming the leaders and the ones coming up with ideas and rules. While the other boys are being put down as the followers and looked upon as less. As well as Piggy being looked as though he isn't as important to them or needed anymore, even if he has ideas- jack has put him in his place as a follower as well. Leaving Jack and Ralph above the others.
Symbolism: This quote symbolizes a type of authority being created by Ralph by the way he is thinking of having specific people for specific "jobs". Authority is shown by the way Ralph is stating what should be happening and the way the boys follow along and do as told as though by "authority" of Ralph.
Theme: Power and control would be the theme for this quote because of the way Ralph holds the power in the group by being the way who demands, suggests, and runs the boys. In a way he holds control over these boys because they follow along Ralph's orders and ideas. Also, this quote represents leadership because Ralph is obviously the leader while the boys are the ones following him and his ideas.
Setting: This quote takes place in the mountain after the boys had started the fire and gathered more wood for it. This all happens once the boys are tired and Ralph begins to believe they need a bit of "rules" as jack would say also.

"The sun in the west was a drop of burning gold that slid nearer and nearer the sill of the world."(pg.43)
Characterization: This characterizes the boys as having a type of hope and a mind with beauty because they are staring intently towards the golden of the sun. As though they are looking for something more. As well as characterizing the island of creating a beauty of the sun and the horizon as a sign of greatness that slowly falls to darkness once gone.
Symbolism: This quote symbolizes a beauty they are finally seeing that slowly turns into a fear as well. Once they see the gold of the sun go down they become aware of the fact that it's gone now. That it gets closer and closer to "the end of the world" and just disappears leaving them with the dark.
Theme: In a way power and control represente the theme because of the way the boys had gained power and control throughout the day against the island, but once the sun goes down they realize that power is gone because it becomes a dark and cold place again. This gives the island power again without one realizing it because the boys are unaware of what may happen now, causing them to lose their control.
Setting: The setting of this quote takes place on the mountain at sundown when the boys are looking towards the horizon of the sky. This is after the boys had created a system of what role each boy takes. Also when they realize the "good" of the day is gone.

"But the first time Ralph says 'fire' you goes howling and screaming up this here mountain. Like a pack of kids!" (pg.45)
Characterization: The other kids are now characterized as what the are. Kids. Immature children who are not rational thinkers, but what more could one expect. Almost like a pack of wild dogs, not human. This is because of diction like "howling...[and] like a pack"

Symbolism: The quote contradicts the symbolism seen is the 3rd quote. This time it is showing how people often times are not obedient and act on impulse rather than thinking things through.

Theme: This plays into civility vs. savagery. Piggy is pointing out their savagery and so he can be seen as more civil than the rest of them due to his ability to point this out.

Setting: This quote takes place at the top of the mountain where they kids begin the fire without thinking of consequences or paying attention to any details.

" He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up." (pg.51)
Characterization: this shows the darker side of Jack. He is beginning to seem more and more aggressive and obsessed.

Symbolism: This shows the part of humans that knows something is wrong but they can not help but want to go against their morals for a kind of feeling they have not felt before.

Theme: This quote is both civility vs. savagery, and individual vs. society. Jack has this impulse to kill and the thought of it is beginning to consume him which makes him savage. At the same time no other characters have this feeling within them that is as aprent as it is with Jack so it separates him from the rest of the kids.

Setting: This happened when Jack was on the beach talking with Ralph. Jack was trying to find a way to explain what the feeling felt like to Ralph but he was not interested.

"... splashing and laughing were only just sufficent to bring them together agian." (pg.55)
Characterization: This shows the playfulness the boys still carry with them, and the fact that having fun is one of the few things that would bring them together as a group.
Symbolism: This moment symbolizes that when together and when they are letting go of the worries they are able to feel free and act like children rather than begin to grow up. In a way it represents the innocence that these boys still have considering the fact that they are lost.
Theme: his is the more light hearted side of the book. This shows the innocence that the kids still have. They don't have any worries in this particular moment.
Setting: The boys are at the beach splashing around on on the shore.

(Pg 57)
Characterization: This shows the determination Jack has as well as his obsession to kill. He is focused, so focused he does not notice the creepers brushing against his skin.

Symbolism: This shows humanity's obsession with things that are not "politically correct" or "civilized". We become obsessed with the feeling we get knowing there won't be a consequence for our actions.

Theme: This quote is showing the individual vs. society once again. this is because Jack is out in the forest alone. No one else is with him. He has separated himself from the others because of his obsessive e drive to kill.

Settings: This is describing the jungle or forest area of the island. Jack was hunting for a pig.

(Pg 57)
Characterization: there was no characterization of any characters in this quote. This was just a description of the sun.
Symbolism: This symbolizes the fact that the light has slipped away from them letting the darkness in.
Theme: In a way this quote resembles loss of innocence because for the first time the boys realize they will be on the island without any light and they are watching it slip away from them. As though the last thing that kept them from losing themselves is slipping away in front of their eyes and letting a darkness enter instead.
Setting: This takes place in the afternoon when the boys are on the mountain watching the sen set on the horizon intently.
