In IB lang lit, there is a requirement for the studied texts to come from diverse backgrounds. I feel that this helps to expand my worldview and understanding of how different issues (ex. inequalities on the basis of race, gender, economic standing) manifest in different cultures. I feel like other English courses would definitely benefit from adopting a similar approach with what texts are studied.

I do think a more diverse reading, especially in 9th-10th grade, can really help broaden students' perspectives. Unless we have a Shakespearean-reading mandate I don't know about, I think revising the curriculum to include reading from a variety of authors with diverse backgrounds will be more engaging/useful for students.

One of the things I have noticed in English class is that women's literature is seen as a genre of its own. Therefore, when we get to a book written by a female author, or one that focuses on culturally diverse perspectives, we think that we can metaphorically "cross off" the women's literature check box on our political correctness to-do-list. This is harmful, because it categorizes women's literature, queer literature, culturally-diverse literature, as the stand-out, while men's literature is the norm. In fact, men's literature is such a norm that it isn't even known as men's literature, it's just known as literature.

To be honest, the school does already do a pretty good job of ensuring that there is a range of literature being explored. Works of literature written by men and women, people of different racial or ethnic backgrounds, and the diverse perspectives that come of of that. I think it is quite unfortunate that in the past, female authors have been hindered. This results in the most famous authors - namely Shakespeare, being seen as the cornerstone of every high school english curriculum, while women's literature is just a nice touch. More should be done, but I think compared to most schools, SAS is doing a good job.

Yes! With busy schedules, I think a lot of us barely have free time to read outside of the classroom parameters. Integrating diverse literature into the curriculum would definitely shed light on the lesser-known perspectives and initiate meaningful discussions.
