We find out in chapter 4, that he wasn't bluffing, but was still surprised to see that Johnny actually went through with the act.

Johnny was flooded by emotions when the Socs attacked. He was sad for Ponyboy and for himself for their family troubles, he is scared because he doesn't want to be beaten up again, and he is angry because he can feel the unfairness of the situation. All of these feelings eventually led up to his killing Bob. If it were during another time in a different situation when Johnny wasn't under so much pressure, he might have not reacted so strongly. All of this should have been taken into account before harshly judging Johnny for that 1 mistake.

Character development: Johnny was introduced as a character with a sensitive heart and like a weak little puppy. He had a lot of strong emotions being held in from his abusive parents, and being jumped by the Socs, and he had finally exploded. He exploded when he killed Bob, defending Ponyboy. I see character development because he went from a weak, scared, boy to a bold and fearless boy. Before, no one would of seen that come out of someone like Johnny, people would expect to see that out of Dally because he is more ruthless toward the Socs.

Character: Johnny killed a Soc in order to defend Ponyboy. This is a surprise since Johnny is not known as a violent person. So when he uses his knife, it really shows how he has adapted and changed from a timid character to a braver one, but also more anxious. Since his intent was not to hurt anyone, it shows that he is still caring and empathetic.

Character:
In the earlier chapters, Johnny is considered a timid, soft-spoken, and shy individual. However, the author also make a point in showing Johnny's anxiety and PTSD after being attacked by the Socs in the blue Mustang for the first time. Johnny's anxiety combined with his fear of the Socs makes him act impulsively, attacking Bob because he was drowning Pony. I think this shows how a switch can flip in someone's mind in a split second. Johnny went from being a scared and quiet character to a murderer.
