He was sad for Ponyboy and for himself for their family troubles, he is scared because he doesn't want to be beaten up again, and he is angry because he can feel the unfairness of the situation. All of these feelings eventually led up to his killing Bob. If it were during another time in a different situation when Johnny wasn't under so much pressure, he might have not reacted so strongly. In the earlier chapters, Johnny is considered a timid, soft-spoken, and shy individual. However, the author also make a point in showing Johnny's anxiety and PTSD after being attacked by the Socs in the blue Mustang for the first time. Johnny's anxiety combined with his fear of the Socs makes him act impulsively, attacking Bob because he was drowning Pony. I think this shows how a switch can flip in someone's mind in a split second.
