How is this different than what the family is doing in the book? We can also ask the students if they have been on a plane and if so where were they going. For our activity, we will make paper airplanes. This is an interactive activity where students will make their own plane that they will fly around the classroom. We could also have a contest of who's paper airplane flies the farthest.

I learned a lot from this project. It pushed me to think outside of the box when thinking of different lessons to connect to the book. With the book that we used it was difficult to try and think of different content areas to connect. This project pushed and challenged my abstract thinking.

I also really enjoyed the book that we based our project on. I think that it had a lot of good lessons to teach. It shows children about important issues in our country that don't necessarily always have a light shine on them. I think that I would definitely consider using this book or the other resources in this project in my future classroom.

Our group didn't necessarily split the work in an organized manner. We all together worked on our overall plan for the project. We all worked on different things that needed to get done. I worked on the play-based lesson about family and also worked on finding standards. I also added some extra aspects like some of the songs linked.

I learned a lot from this project! Our book dealt with some issues that aren't as fun to talk about during a read-aloud activity. We wanted students to understand the severity of homelessness and how we can help those who are homeless and how we can teach students to avoid homelessness. The activities that I thought of were the Seek first to understand then to be understood activity. This lesson teaches students that we should always listen first and hear what others have to say before we give our help. This is important because our "help" may not be what the person needs. Sometimes the person just needs to be heard and listened to. I also included some music videos along with one of my partners Olivia. We found songs that elicit a message of hope and to rely on the people we love. This activity of incorporating music into the lesson will keep kids engaged and interested.
Overall, this project was a great way to practice putting a read-aloud lesson plan together while also incorporating standards. I also made the activity about flying and putting together the paper airplanes. This activity doesn't directly relate to the stories meaning but it relates to the idea of flying the book is based around. Students actually engineering their paper airplanes will help their fine motor skills and also be a fun collaborative game that the class can play. This is an interactive activity that builds upon students' engineering skills and is just a fun break from the heaviness of talking about homelessness. Overall, our group split our work pretty evenly and we all collaborated to come up with the ideas and activities.

I thought this project was a great way to teach children what people go through around the world today. As a group we really took time to focus on how to make this story a fun discussion topic in a classroom. We chose the book Fly Away Home, because after reading the story it leaves the reader with the mindset of appreciating the small things in life.

One of the items I chose to put on this padlet was the story titled Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon. In the story we chose Fly Away Home the main characters (Father and Son) are living in an airport because they are homeless. Everyone else in the airport quickly judges them because of their dirty clothes. The story Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon is a great way for children to understand that you should try to understand where someone comes from first before jumping to conclusions and judging their appearance.

I also chose to incorporate a graphic that shows to always be open-minded. I believe that this graphic would be a great thing to include on a wall of a classroom or even on the classroom door, so that children will walk past it everyday knowing that they should always go into new situations with an open mind. This graphic fits well into our story, because later on in the story their are people that notice the father and his son are struggling to live and decide to help them without even knowing who it is.

My final thoughts on this story is that I believe that once children have read this book they can talk quietly amongst one another about times they have traveled around the country, or even a time where they have done or received a random act of kindness.

This project was such a unique way to give outreach to parents and students. It provides them with all different types of ways to connect with the book we had. Our book was entitled Fly Away Home. We were given this book and chose to keep it because we immediately were able to come up with some really cool ideas for activities or projects that students could participate in.

I put a variety of ideas on our board but one of my favorites was the shopping dramatic play activity. It is so helpful in teaching children to be mindful about needs vs. wants and could even help them empathize with their parents. Not to mention it is super fun, and can help to develop awesome in-depth conversations.

One of my other favorite additions to the project was the music. I personally connect strongly to music and I think that a well composed song can evoke all sort of emotions. When my group members and I realized we had a mutual enjoyment of Glee we decided to make all of our songs Glee renditions. Particularly I really like Imagine because in the scene a deaf choir is performing the song, mostly in a speaking voice with inflection. The Glee club acknowledges their struggle and finds beauty in sharing their spoken song and the Glee club's sung version. It's a special and moving scene in the show and fully resembles Standard 16.2.2.B1 ; recognize and tolerate the uniqueness of people in all situations.

My final thoughts on the story and the project is it was an unprecedented outcome. I think when we first read the book and felt that it was dark and rather sad, we were concerned about how we could shine a more positive light on the subject. Once we got the hang of it though, it was really an instant flow of ideas and creativity. I feel like we all did a really good job communicating with each other and adding our individual contributions. It ended up being far more attainable then I think we originally thought it would be.
