Lesson Focus: Comprehension through discussing cause and effect after reading.
Word Work: Long a vs. short a - looking at the title there are two long a's. Discuss how to make long and short a's when spelling.
Vocabulary: Words to look at and discuss: milkmaid, market, thought, pail, miller, toss. Phrases: Toss her head, Don't count your chickens before they hatch.
Text introduction: Discuss what a milkmaid is - then tell students that the story is about a milkmaid who carries a pail of milk on her head and thinks about what she will do with the milk. Students should pay attention to how on thing causes something else to happen which causes something else to happen. (cause and effect)

Did this today - we didn't get to the cause and effect part yet - will touch on it tomorrow, but homonyms came up with pail/pale, maid/made and let to more discussions about homonyms! Students seemed to enjoy this book and have enjoyed the other new books we have read

I am currently using this book with my students. Lesson Focus: Introduce students to nonfiction and it's features. First, I had the students look through the book and talk about what they noticed. We discussed the features (labels, captions, bold print, glossary, and diagrams). This text has a good lead to get the reader interested (use of question for lead). This text can be used as a mentor text to show an example of a good lead, reasons provided for opinion writing, and details given for informational writing.
