What they say: They use netball and sport as a way of empowering girls through a pyramid of personal development, social development and economic development. The journey starts with a wide reaching sports programme for teenage girls, who can then progress through being peer mentors until they become coaches. These programmes increase their confidence and aspiration. The girls then teach their mothers about health issues such as HIV/AIDs and as they become economically successful this brings about the respect of their fathers and further opportunities for personal as well as community development. As Coaches the girls become role models for other particpants encouraging and supporting their ambition. Analysis: This tackles the gender imequalities, and cultural practices of early marraige and reduced education for girls, by encouraging girls ambition and confidence. The idea is that the girls take their new skills and begin to influence their own families, creating adult allies who encourage their development. As the programme iterates and embeds within the community, the success of the individual girls and the economic and health benefits of the programme are demonstrated to the wider community, leading to greater uptake and a gradual cultural change.

What they say: Play Onside provides access to education through football and play for all children on the Thai/Burma border, regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion or socio-economic status. They promote Gender Equality, focus on Social Cohesion and empower the local communities through close partnership with schools and other educational organisations. Analysis: As with the 'Football for all' model, Play Onside use team sports to integrate particpants from different backgrounds through a sense of belonging and shared activity. In addition they work with other organisations such as the Star Flower School which provides education for children with disabilities and additional support needs. Play Onside is a good example of a sports initiative that is using sport to integrate participants from a wide range of backgrounds whilst also tackling ableism. They fund and support their programmes with help from partner organisations both within the NGO sector of Development and sport and dvelopment, but also through sponsorship from international corporate businesses.

Kick 4 Life
What they say: Kick 4 life uses football as a mechanism for generating outcomes aligned with the sustainable development goals. Providing education to employment pathways for young people, by teaching sports, health and life skills to participants, across a range of programmes. Successful participants from these programmes can then progress into the Kick4Life academy which provides secondary education scholarships funded by partner organisations whilst also continuing with the sport and extra curricular support. There is then a tertiary programme available, with two streams one focused on life and employment skills and the other towards achieving student-athlete scholarships at international universities.Kick4Life also run two professional football teams and a conference centre which provide further opportunities for participants as well as raising the profile and funding for the charity. Analysis: As with a number of other projects they have a wide reaching general programme which is aimed at promoting good health and well being in the area. These engage with local communities and encourage young people to play sport whilst also delivering public health information around health and hygiene and in this particular area HIV/AIDs awareness. They also celebrate their academy students as role models, providing aspiration and visible opportunities for other young people in Lesotho, encouraging the continuation of education and providing a route to employment. However as with many other sports organisations the upper tiers of programmes are only available to participants with ability.

Pro Sport Development - Khel Vikas
What they say: Working with indiginous young people in rural Odisha- in partnership with 4 residential schools that support the underprivileged and indiginous community- 1500 students enrolled in a full time PE programme, with a further 20 after school programmes which included weight lifting, athletic, Kho Kho and Kabbadi, a number of the students competed at state level with weight lifting students becoming medalists in national competitions- these athletes where both male and female. The use of sport alongside schooling is a mechanism for teaching life skills and sports concepts as well as supporting young people to become elite athletes and to develop skills that take them into working life Analysis:This type of intervention allows students with ability to excel, without requiring a privileged or financially comfortable background. Furthermore the visible success of athletes participating in these programmes provide role models and hope and aspiration for other young people from similar backgrounds. The visible success of specific athletes at national and international level can also promote funding for the sport and development sector allowing a wider reach of interventions.
