He was born in and raised on a farm north of York, Upper Canada. He witnessed the Montgomery Tavern burning when he was fifteen, which was near his home during the rebellion in Upper Canada. Three years later he join The Upper Canada Academy, which became the Victoria College in 1841. He started the Canadian Farmer which later morphed into Canadian Agriculturalist. He later started writing for Brown's Globe. Journalism led him to politics. In 1854 he decided to run for office and declared himself a candidate.
