Cause:

Tropical cyclones are caused by lots of storms and warm water. Ita started with a wet and windy area of low pressure forming over the Solomon islands. Ita became an official tropical cyclone on the 3rd of April.
Cyclone Ita reached its peak intensity on the 11th of April.
Description:
Keeping up the strong winds it turned southwest. In a few days Ita slowed as it moved away from Australia and towards New Zealand. On 17 April, the storm collapsed, just as Ita was attacking New Zealand, with powerful wind and rain.

Response 1:
On the 15th of April, the prime minister of Papua New Guinea provided PGK $300,000 to help the victims of Ita.The Papua New Guinea defence force went to give out relief supplies, and damage surveys were conducted. Papua New Guinea sent out ten relief teams. By the 17th of April, Papua New Guinea had also dispatched rice to residents in need of food.

Response 2:
New Zealand offered an immediate NZ $300,000 in funds and dispatched a plane filled with emergency supplies and response staff. Australia donated $250,000 on the 6th of April and sent more people to help. On the 8th of April, Australia increased its funds to $3 million while New Zealand gave another NZ$1.2 million.

Social impacts:
Cyclone Ita caused approximately 40 deaths, with many people injured. Houses, school, hospitals and many other buildings were destroyed. Powerlines were destroyed, along with trees, roofs and other things
Environmental impacts:
Cyclone Ita passed directly overhead some areas of the Great Barrier Reef, damaging it very severely. Many different areas were damaged, decreasing marine life population. Fortunately, most of the coral that was damaged is hardy and will have grown back quickly.

Economic impacts:
Cyclone Ita damaged banana, eggplant, tomato and sugarcane plantations badly, increasing the prices. Sugar cane farmers in Queensland say about 90% of crops in the region have been wiped out by Cyclone Ita. The sugarcane growers chairman, Paul Schembri, says it could take years for the crops to be back to the way they were.
