They adopted the western idea of being able to purchase land. Foreigners purchased the most land, leaving the common folk with about 1% of land.
Foreigners took advantage of the fact that most Hawaiians weren't fluent in English and didn't fully understand the terms of land ownership. By signing this treaty, King Kalakaua signed away most of his political power as monarch.
