This is a research essay that I wrote for my Sociology of Diversity course. This was one of my favourite topics to research and write on because I knew that Indigenous students faced barriers in schools that other students don't, but I wasn't sure to what extent and the details of why. I chose this topic because I understood that as a future educator I would have Indigenous students in my classroom and wanted to be able to support them to the best of my ability. One of the biggest take aways that I took from this research is that the Indigenous students and their families perspectives of success in schools looks very different than non-Indigenous students; their idea of success is rooted in the overall well-being of the student, rather than focusing in on how they are performing academically. I will use these learnings in my teaching practises by having students reflect and evaluate their mental, physical, spiritual, and social well being, and use them as formative assessment to see where my teaching practises or the classroom dynamic may need to be altered to better support the well-being of the students in the class.
