During this time there's a lot of human trafficking going on. Her father sold her and she had to go work for someone else named Mumtaz. Lakshmi was very excited to go work on her new job. She didn't know how it looked like 'til she got there. She hated that place. They called it the "Happiness House." Mumtaz was very evil to the girls if they didn't obey her. They had to do whatever she said and if they didn't, they would suffer severe consequences. Lakshmi was sold into sexual slavery and she didn't know. She was just thirteen she wasn't really aware. In order to win her freedom back, she had to pay off her family's debt by working for Mumtaz. Every day men would come and Lakshmi had to please them. She had no choice and it was part of her job. She was told one day by an American men that he would come for her and take her to some place safe. He said that and she got happy and believed him. He came back for her and she got ready to leave with him. She had to make a choice into leaving with him or staying with Mumtaz forever. She decided to leave with him for the better. Honestly, this isn't really fair. This book made me really sad and it made me think about what girls like Lakshmi had to go through. I wish there was a way to stop this. Nowadays, there still is human trafficking activity going on. I don't really think this will ever be stopped.
