Conservation and Irreversibility

Children in preoperative stages are unable to understand the idea of conservation as they cannot use reverse thinking to solve problems. Examples of this include many of Piaget's conservation experiments such as changing the formation of the same amount of clay, or pouring the same amount of water into a taller cup. Children in this stage of development tend to assume that the item that looks the largest, contains for volume of matter. This is a cognitive error called irreversibility. They do not understand that you can simply reverse the experiment, or imagine the experiment in your mind to look the same as the controlled object.

The way they play

Another key point I found in the video was the way the children in the preoperative stage tend to play. They are able to use imagination to take part in "symbolic play." They use objects the symbolize their imagination. They also play in an "egocentric" way. They are unable to view the world from any other perspectives aside from their own. An example shown in the video was when playing hide and seek, children believe that if they cover their eyes and cannot see the seeker, that they also cannot be seen.

After the age of 2, children experience a "vocabulary explosion." Along with they're rapidly increasing vocabulary, they are finding new ways to make difficult words easier to pronounce... It sometimes might sound like an entire new language altogether.... instead of "spaghetti" it becomes "pssstetti." They are also able to engage in more extensive conversation as they begin to form longer sentences.

Children begin to somewhat understand how to use morphemes. It seems like they understand which morphemes are appropriate to use, such as possession or verb tenses, but they over use those morphemes. This is a term called, "overregularization."

"bestest"
"taked"
"solded"
"watcheded"
