The mouth is an opening in the head where digestion begins. It breaks down food into smaller pieces. When you put food into your mouth, you begin to salivate. Then you start to chew with your teeth. Your tongue starts moving the food around in your mouth until it is small enough to swallow. Your tongue starts to move the bolus toward the back of your throat and then you swallow.

The next stop is the esophagus. The esophagus is a long, muscular tube that is 25 centimeters long and can lead in two ways. It can lead to your windpipe and your stomach. The thing that stops food from going into your windpipe is called the epiglottis, which is like a door for air and food. It takes 2 to 3 seconds for a bite of food to get to your stomach from your esophagus.

The stomach is a large, stretchy, muscular bag, about the size of a tennis ball when empty and the size of a football when completely full. It turns and mushes up the food you ate into chyme, which is a pulpy acidic fluid which passes from the stomach to the small intestine, containing gastric juices and partly digested food.
