Kevin Han- Are Patents More Beneficial to Our Society, or Harmful?

My issue- Intellectual Property/ Mainly Patents

Thesis statement
Patents, despite being flawed, are collectively more beneficial than harmful. This is since the function of patents despite being imperfect, incentivizes innovators internationally, and has a more substantial quantitative impact. Natheless, prizes, can still serve as an alternative to patents while keeping patents functions.

One compelling question- Do patents benefit society more, or harm it more?

Supporting questions
1 What are patents and their function?
2 What are its effects on our society?
3 What is a better alternative?

Rationale- Patients are the center point of motivating innovation in many different sectors. However, as we look into pharmaceuticals, and sectors that have a huge influence on people's lives, we have to ask if patents genuinely benefit society, or if the monopolization it offers is even worth the trade-off we society gives for more technological advances. For example in the pharmaceutical industry in which we have to ask if it would save more lives with the medicine that's incentivized and if it is worth it for the means of sacrificing those in more impoverished conditions who couldn't afford the initial medication, or even if there has been an alternative to this issue that would promise the same incentivization aspect Patents are most commonly defended for, but one that would take away the overbearing power monopolization can bring companies.

SDG- 8-Decent Work and Economic Growth 9- Industry Innovation, and Infrastructure 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities

My Compelling Question:How the current situation for plastic pollution is in China and what can we do about it?

Thesis: China is currently the largest source of mismanaged plastic waste in the world. This impacts the lives of living organisms below water and on land. Plastic, especially single-use plastic, is cheap and really useful, so people in China use billions of plastic products everyday. However, excessive amount of plastic wastes would cause land, air and sea pollution.Because of this, China should take more responsibility to reduce plastic waste through different methods. Although the impact plastic has on China cannot vanish, people in China can help to lower it by recycling and minimizing the amount of plastics they use.

Supporting Questions:
1. How much plastic is used in China and what is its impact?
2. How is China currently managing its plastic pollution?
3.

My issue: Gender Inequality

Thesis:
In America, gender inequality has been a massive issue since the 1860’s. Since then, there has been huge growth, but women are still suffering daily both mentally and physically. Many women's wondrous abilities have been limited due to the daily criticism and the choices they do not have the power to make.

Compelling question: How does gender inequality affect the daily lives of women/girls in America?

Supporting Questions:

1. What is gender equality?

2. What are women's rights?

3. If "Women's rights are human rights", why are women still looked down on?

4. What can we do to help others realize that Women/girls are equal to men/boys?

Rationale: Everyday, many people look down on women/girls, thinking they're less capable then men because of their gender. Because of their lack of empowerment and resources in many places, women and girls face life-threatening risks daily. They receive worse medical care than men, because of reasons like lack of education and lower incomes. Poverty rates are the highest among young girls. As boys and girls get older, the gender gap in poverty gets larger. This is likely because girls don’t receive the same education and job opportunities as boys. When women receive better education, healthcare, and job opportunities, they can thrive.

SDG: 4,5, 8, 10, 16

Issue: gender norms and inequality

Thesis Statement: For gender equality to become a ubiquitous goal, it is critical to track benevolent sexism in the world and in China as it sets gender roles within the household, deprives women’s confidence in the workplace, and caps women’s success in the society.

Question: How is benevolent sexism entrenched in China's different societal aspects?

Supporting Questions:
1. What is benevolent sexism?
2. What household expectations are assigned to women because of this kind of stereotyping? What about specifically in Asia?
3. How is it represented in the workplace, or throughout a woman's career?
4. What is the impact of when these norms and expectations become institutionalized?
5. What can we do to support women's rights and eliminate gender norms?

Rationale: Though countries have been making substantial change in their society towards hostile sexism (assault, domestic violence, etc.), the vaguer type of discrimination is often dismissed. Benevolent sexism can be a simple statement "girls shouldn't stress too much about academics", a seemingly protective but intrinsically paternalistic action, or an unspoken expectation of a woman's role within a family. Its accumulation diminishes the confidence of women to succeed in the society. This kind of inequality follows women from when they are young and receiving education, through to when they marry and build a career, all the way until they begin contributing to our world but comes face to face with institutional barriers.

SDGs: 5 (gender equality), 10 (reduced inequalities), 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions); 4 (quality education) and 8 (decent work and economic growth) can also be related.

Thesis: Every child has the inalienable right of dignity, equality, and right to education. Although there have been significant improvements, many still live in poverty with no education. Education is vital to children because not only does education benefit themself in many aspects, such as building skills and knowledge to help them with their daily lives, but also benefits the whole world, impacting the economy positively.

My issue: Education of underprivileged students

My ONE Compelling Question: Why is it important for every child, regardless of family circumstances, to receive an education?

Supporting Questions:
1. Why should we care and help them?
2. How do we ensure each child has the right to learn?
3.

Thesis statement: Plastic pollution is harmful to our ocean. Since it is disturbing the food web in the ocean, making inedible water, blocking marines' way, making the ocean to be full of plastic, and making a harder place to live for marines.

My Issue: Water pollution(by garbage)

Compelling question: Why are there scraps in the water?

Rationale: There are so many campaign to stop it and get better with this situation. As they are trying to save it, problems get worse. For Ocean, there are a lot of plastic scraps that are floating on surface or under the surface of water. Animals such as turtle, fish ate it. Turtle coundn't digest it and it caused gas in turtle's stomach. It made turtle to float on the surface, and its cover burned by the sun. Fish is even one of food that we usually eat in daily life. When fish eat plastic, then we are also getting small scraps of plastic in it. Animals suffer from it and these hurts are coming to human again.

Supportin Questions:
1. What are main garbage in the ocean?
2. What would be natural way to solve this problem?
3. How would person can help to solve this problem?

SDG: 6, 14
