Essential Question: 4: Beliefs
This technique demonstrates the essential question about beliefs as she is questioning her belief in God because Anoosh has been executed. She wonders where God was in all of this turmoil; thus, she is shouting at him to get out of her life. The death influences her beliefs so as to question God.
Graphic Novel Elements: In this picture, the Speech Bubble shape is being used to show the extent of Marjane's anger as she is shouting at God. Her dialogue has an angry tone, and having the speech bubble be jagged emphasizes her shouting tone. Her trust has turned to anger, and this is conveyed in the jagged, shouting shape of the Speech Bubble.

In this panel, the faces in these two characters clearly show that one person is angry and stern with the other and it is making the second person scared and making them have a worried and frightened facial expression. You can see these emotions with the anger being expressed through the eye brows pointed down, bolder eyes, and the opened mouth with a slight frown and with the scared emotion being shown throughwide eyes, small pupils, raised eyebrows, and a slight frown to indicate that they’re uncomfortable. All of this relates to th essential question of “how does a person make sense of and survive in a conflicted world?” By how they’re showing two distinct ways to attempt to survive in a revolution like their own, being angry and standing up and the other is just cowering and hoping you won’t be collateral damage.

In this panel, the language in the bubbles isn’t English anymore, they’re using their first language instead of English and you can tell by the text bubbles that they’re yelling at each other due to the pointed bubbles instead of the regular rounded or rectangular ones. When you grow up in a society where people are yelling in all sorts of languages, it gives you a different sharpness in your mind to comupte and understand things quicker since you have to constantly change languages everywhere you go. Just think of Marjane, she needs to know English, French, and the Islamic basics of language too, that’s a lot. (Im bilingual but knowing three just seems like a lot) So going back to the essential question, this relates to the essential question of “Childhood: what affects us going into childhood?” This may affect her growing up and how she acts towards other people seeing people yelling at eachother in a place as simple and public as a grocery store, especially since kids tend to do what they see adults doing since they look up to them.

Question 1:In this panel Marjane and family hear that Iranian's bombed Baghdad. Marjane and her dad both show lots of excitement and passion for this. The faces they make show how passionate they are for their country. As one grows up, they learn about political events that are hidden from us as a child. We create our own opinions but most of them are influenced by our parents beliefs. In this case, Marjane has seen small parts of what her father believes and learns from it to create her own opinion.
In this panel the faces of Marjane and her father are similar showing that the parents can influence a child's opinion of reaction. Although her mother isn't showing a similar reaction, the parent who is known in this time in Iran to have the most power can have more of an impact on opinions. This panel shows happiness in what is happening at this time in Iran throughout the family.

Question 3: In this panel, Marjanes mother had just been insulted by two men and told her that she should be thrown in the garbage and if she didnt want that then she should put on her veil. Marjane's mom was very hurt by this causing her to go into depression. For women these days. its very hard to survive in this world. Many of these women go into depression just like how Marjanes mother did. However the younger girls don't understand the rules they must follow at this time, they just do as they are told. Most women and men at this time follow what they are told to do even if that means they fall into depression.
The technique of using foreground and background can show the distance that families make between one of another as a result of the war. As Marjane is far away in the background trying to help her depressed mother who is up close in the panel. It draws attention to the main emotion at the time

In this panel, Marjane had just been aloud to go to her first meeting for fundamentalism. She is finally old enough to see and be apart of the rebelling. The mob decides to go in the wrong direction and gets really angry. They start to attack one another and Marjane sees the reality of these rebellious movements. I think that people try to survive and try to make sense of this conflicted world by going with the crowd then defending themselves.
The speech bubble of Marjane has spiked edges showing that Marjane is scared. The text is also in a larger font which emphasizes the emotion. Marjane is seeing the reality of Iranian people and it is shown that she is shocked by how horrible these people can be.

You can see in this panel during the chapter "The Sheep" that the panel takes up the entire page. It is just a big open space and it isn't portraying much in terms of story line or dialogue. The reason for this panel is the show just how lost Marji is. Instead of fitting it in maybe a small or medium sized panel they chose to fill to the whole page to look like space which can portray Marjis feeling of lost with no bearings.

The scenes after Anoosh's arrest where Marjane visits him in prison is darkly shaded all around the two characters, even the outer walls of the prison are shaded black unlike the rest of the buildings throughout the book. This could be because of the dark, cold feeling that a jail has. The prison is portrayed almost like a void of nothingness. Unfortunately those shaded walls would be the last thing Anoosh would see with his murder following not far after.
