Create a digital representation of an original story using Ozobots

Objectives

· Students will describe at least one way each character from the discussed short stories confronts/overcomes an identified difficulty.

· Students will write an original, short story where a main character encounters/overcomes at least 3 challenges/problems.

· Students will create a visual story board illustrating the main events of their short story.

· Students will direct a video of their Ozobot accurately “reading” codes that reflect their story’s actions/emotions.

Students will be provided 3 short stories where a main character encounters obstacles, issues, and/or problems that must be overcome. Small groups will identify similarities in how the different characters confronted and overcame the obstacles/issues/problems presented.

Small group findings will be shared with the entire class.

· Story Board paper

· Crayons/Colored pens

In the same small groups, students will write an original short story, similar to those evaluated in the Intro. The stories must include a main character and secondary character(s). The story will include at least 3 obstacles/issues/problems that the main character encounters and “solves”.

With a completed short story, student will next adapt their work to fit the world of an Ozobot. Recognizing the movements and potential limitations of the Ozobot, students will adapt their story to fit into an Ozobot world. For example, problem encounters, as well as, actions taken, must match the various pre-coded movements of “the bot”.

With adaptations to the story completed, students will make test runs of the bot movements to make sure an accurate match is made.

Students, in small groups, will utilize their adapted, short story and create a visual storyboard of the events depicted in their writing that includes a pathway for the main character to follow from beginning to end. The codes chosen, therefore, should reflect, as best as possible, the words and meaning of the story.

As part of the completed project, students will complete a copy of the story along with placements of the Ozobot actions (see below). The narrative should focus on the story and not on the turns and movement of the bot. These movements should naturally reflect the storyline instead.

Along the way, the character will need to utilize various movements and speed changes which reflect the action/challenges of the story.

Once completed, make a video that includes the main character following along the narrated story.

Videos are most effective if the entire story board can be viewed at all times.

Along the way, the character will need to utilize various movements and speed changes which reflect the action/challenges of the story.

The story/story board should include at least:

9 directional codes
- straight can only be used at an intersection.
1 U-Turn (not at end of line)
2 line jumps
5 speed changes
3 cool moves
Utilizes a colored marker for affect

*Each of these should be documented & numbered in your written story.

*Example: (line jump,1), (speed change, 3)
