This literature review explores research involving educator attrition due to changes in American society. Specifically, the impact of childhood trauma on teachers, the increase of responsibilities and the high stress levels caused by achievement tests and curriculum shifts. As Americans continue to engage in competition with other nations, the education institution is at greater risk (T. Alban, personal communication, January 24, 2019).

This creates compassion fatigue, causes tensions with administrators and adds to the value conflicts about state and federal expectations of teachers.

Teachers are opting out of teaching in the classroom. The teaching versus non-teaching roles, lack of resources and support, the secondary stress from children with trauma and the ever growing lists of demands from the government (i.e testing) are driving the highly qualified teachers out of the classroom and sometimes out of the teaching profession altogether. American students continue to be compared to students around the world via test scores and standardized achievements, adding to the pressures of the teachers.

The number of college students choosing teaching as a potential profession has dropped approximately 38% showing the need to evaluate teacher needs (T. Alban, personal communication January 24, 2019). They show the second highest rate of depression when compared to fifty five other careers (Stiglbauer & Zuber, 2018). Educators are “helping professionals,” meaning they do more than teach content; often times, they provide emotional and mental health supports to students living with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) (Fowler, 2015). Teachers are school leaders, mentors, nurses and counselors, filling the role necessary in the moment. Teaching is compared to other high stress careers, such as paramedics, police officers and social workers (Koenig et al, 2018). These multiple roles can clash with one another or clash with the instruction creating a value discrepancy between the teacher and the policy initiatives implemented by government agencies. As a result, the teaching profession may be losing qualified educators due to policy changes at the county, state and federal levels and an increase in student diversity, specifically, children who experience trauma.

There are several articles about compassion fatigue for nurses and other helping professionals. However, there are not a lot of article claiming that teachers should be included in the helping professional category. Also, there are gaps in the multiple role stream, claiming that teachers fill multiple roles in the classroom and school building.

Moving forward, the research should focus on ways to retain teachers and lessen their stress. How can administrators provide supports to teachers in order to help them cope with the ever growing demands? How can policy change help strengthen the profession instead of tearing it down? These are some of the questions that still linger.
