Post 1 - Character Traits - Mama/Lena Younger

Proud
"Plenty. My husband always said being any kind of a servant wasn't a fit thing to have to be. He always said a man's hands was made to make things, or to turn the earth with - not to drive nobody's car for 'em - or - (She looks at her own hands) carry they slop jars. And my boy is just like him - he wasn't to wait on nobody" (Hansberry 78)

This quote shows how Mama is proud because she spoke to Walter with thoughtful reminiscence about her late husband and spoke how he believed that he was meant for more. She shows her pride of the different things that she believes in throughout the play. She told Beneatha about her religion, and spoke to Ruth about how Walter used to be a better man than he was. She shows throughout the story that she is not only proud of her past, but of her heritage. Lena Younger is most certainly a prideful person in A Raisin In The Sun.

Stubborn

This quote shows how Mama is stubborn because she refused to give up her dream house, and spent the insurance check without consulting anybody else in the family. Her little plant being a constant reminder of her dream of having a big house that she can have for her and her family. She was not wring with the decision to make the purchase of the house but, wrong or not she still made it nearly impossible to change her mind throughout the entirety of the play.

I think that Mama is very unpredictable character even though she is very straight forward person. I think that she is very unpredictable because she kept the family on their toes with her antics, along with dealing with the rest of the family's internal struggles. She will be sympathetic with them at one point, and then without hesitation smack the crap out out one of them (Beanetha). She bought the house without notice nor negotiation.

The character Lena Younger in my opinion is probably one of the best characters in the story. She is the character that is easiest to relate to for me because she stayed true to her morality and beliefs throughout the entire play. I think that Mama is good person, because she helped everybody her children throughout the problems that they they having trouble with.

She loved all of them and didn't hesitate to do something to benefit them at her expense, she took care of her children no matter the situation, and most of all was there for them when they needed guidance or a push in the right direction.

This song reminds of Mama because she is a proud African American, and the final scene in the play, is when she convinced her song to not sell the house for the money. This is a huge scene that showed the true colors of not only Mama, but the entire family.
