The lives of teenagers before the Japanese occupation was manageable , fun and were in their hands as they could speak a common language , English . Instead of having the trouble to learn the Japanese language during the Japanese occupation after the British surrendered to them . Education in school was not as guarded and lessons in classes were not looked over for with Japanese soldiers , armed . Even class photo-takings had someone soldiers in it . Before the Japanese occupation , students were free and not consistantly being looked over for or threatened . During the Japanese occupation , they had to learn how to sing the Japanese National Anthem , Kimigayo and had to take the trouble as they were forced . Before the time period , the students were free and had to sing the Singapore National Anthem which everyone knew by heart and probably memorized it .
