Like many things, the Oktoberfest developed over time, and it hasn't always been the festivity's we know of today. The idea of the Oktoberfest originated on October 12th, 1810. During this time in Munich, Prince Ludwig, before he became King Ludwig I, got married to Princess Teresa of Sassonia-Hildburghausen. To celebrate this joyous event, Bavaria held horse races and a feast after the wedding. Because of this the area that the Oktoberfest is held on is called Theresienwiese, or Theresas Green. The following year, they decided to continue the tradition, and the Oktoberfest was born!

During the 1800s there were some changes to the festivities surrounding the Oktoberfest. In 1811, an agricultural fair was also organized around this time to support the Bavarian economy. This fair still takes place every four years, while things such as the horse races no longer are part of the festivities.

The Oktoberfest is an annual festival held in Munich. It lasts for two weeks with its final day always being on the first Sunday in October. While many associate this festival with beer and dancing, which is still fitting, there is much more to this two week event. During the Octoberfest you can expect parades, tents, rides, games, dancing, music playing, food, drinks, musicians and much more!

While a lot of the Oktoberfest activities can be held outside, the main area for beer drinking and fun is inside a countless array of tents. These "tents" are usually more like elaborate structures then like anything you'd see at a campground. These tents are normally run by certain breweries and are usually packed with people and can normally fit thousands. Most of the tents are elaborate and have different themes. While there's too many to count, here's a list of some of the more popular ones!

-Hofbräu: This tent offers one of the best atmospheres throughout the whole fest! With almost 10,000 seats and having sold 750,000 liters of beer during the fest, its easy to see why people love this tent so much.
-Hacker-Pschorr: Many locals and visitors flock to this tent because of the spread out age demographic instead of being filled with the younger generation. One of the most notable things though about this tent is its theme of old world Munich, with the ceilings painted blue with a bunch of white fluffy clouds.
-Shooters: One of the biggest draws for this tent is its amazing music and atmosphere. Because of the music, this tent draws many famous people every year. Just like may of the tents that are bright and colorful the shooters tent is no exception. The ceilings are adore with bright blue yellow and red colors, bringing out the true tent feel.

The parade walks through the center of Munich and helps to celebrate the start of the festivities. Other parades such as the opening parade where the brewers enter with horses and music also occur.

Traditional Church Service: While mainly meant for employees, anyone can attend

Family Day: Discounted rides and performances!

Open-Air Concert: An open air concert is held if the weather is good, and has 400 musicians!

All held in Germany!

Oktoberfest Traditions

While the Oktoberfest has evolved over the years, it still holds tight to many traditions and is rich with german culture.

O'Zapft is!: This tradition is done at the very beginning to kick off the festivities. Preformed by the mayor in the oldest tent, the tradition is to "tap" the keg or hit it with a hammer as few times as possible to break the keg open before yelling O'Zapft is! After it is followed by gun solutes the festivities begin!

Traditional Clothing: While you can wear whatever you please to the Oktoberfest, almost everyone still wears traditional german attire. This can range from Dirndl ( a type of layered dress) l to Lederhosen, braided hair, hats, to deerskin clothing. Even the way that your bow faces on the Dirndl holds traditional value. For example, if the bow is on the right side of your body the wearer is spoken for, but if the bow is on the left they are single.

Music: Music is also a very important part of the Oktoberfest and its culture. There are even popular Oktoberfest songs and a lot of live music throughout the fest.

Gun Solute: Just as the fest has many opening rituals, they also have a few customary closing traditions, one being the gun solute. This is preformed at noon on the last day of the festival in front of the Bavarian staute. The shooting kings are also crowned here and are celebrated with a solute.
