He always said "I will work harder" like a personal motivation. The evolution of his character became stronger and more loyal in the chapter 3. But was too loyal and the pigs took advantage of his naive attitude. 

The pigs were clever and thinked of ways for the animals to use humans tools. They were assigned to learn, how to read and write. After the pigs became fluent on both things.
