It is a pretty charged schedule with many preps and an overflowing office space and cart! That aside, the biggest challenges (that pertain to a request for more time) I have found have been (1) finding the time to cover all the standards in the Maine World Language standards (it is not possible) and (2) finding the time to assess standards enough to amount to validity in reporting. At the lower levels, particularly K-2, there really is no time to do this (I really need to be able to have more time in class or time to pull the kiddos out 1-by-1 for assessment). Last year in particular I started to include a statement in my progress report comments stating just this. This year, my middle school class times have decreased a total of 20 minutes/wk for each grade, which is significant in what I cannot get done (a total of roughly 12 hours less per year - 68 hours of instruction per year in previous years, 56 hours this year). I know that this is was due to a change in middle level scheduling and nothing more, but the impact on what I can do is significant. It turns out that this year, I have a little more prep time in my schedule, but it comes with an unintended negative impact. Finally, due to having some "extra" time, I have taken it upon myself to volunteer some instructional time in Pre-K twice per week. The kids love it, I love it, and the parents seem to love it.
