Uluru is a sacred site for the Aborigines of the region, and has a particularly important cultural significance in the history and traditional life of these peoples. The Uluru was populated by several Aboriginal tribes Anangu: Pitjantjatjara and Yankunitjatjara. The "Uluru" word has no particular meaning. However, it is used to translate the words “protection” and “long sleep” or “journey” used also to define “freedom”, in most Anangu languages.

Legends are part of the essential elements of all Aboriginal culture; they influence social life, art and all rituals such as dances, songs... There are many versions of the creation of the world according to the Aborigines: The world was once informed. None of the places we know existed until creators, in the form of humans, plants or animals, travelled across the earth. So, in a process of creation and destruction, they formed the landscapes that we know today. The land of the Anangu is still inhabited by the minds of dozens of these ancestral creators who are called Tjukuritja or Waparitja.

For them, each stone has a soul and must be respected as an integral part of the world around us. The Aborigines named the area “Purnululu” and the settlers named it “Bungle Bungle” with reference to the grass found in the park (“bundle bundle”).

It is believed that the Aborigines have inhabited this area for more than 40,000 years, and the park hosts many proofs of their occupation. Ancient rock art sites and funerary sites can be found throughout the park, which are managed by Aboriginal peoples Djaru and Kija. The name Purnululu, meaning sandstone, was given to the region by its traditional Kija guardians. In 1879, explorer Alexander Forrest crossed the region but found the soils too arid and desert to implant any breeding. If in the 20th century some grasslands of the park were invested by Europeans for a pastoral raising, it was only in 1980 that the general public really discovered the singularity of this magical site.
