One day after work, Frank and Joe take Charlie to a bar, where they force him to dance like a buffoon , then tease him and leave him. Not understanding that they are making fun of him, Charlie laughs.

He recalls a time - referring to himself in the third person, not as “I”, but as “Charlie” - when Gimpy tried to teach him how to make muffins, but was unable to get it right.

The first memory refers to how his work relations, people Charlie thinks he can be trusted because of his low intellectual abilities, take advantage of him by making fun of him in public.

In the second memory, we can see how Gimpy, if he took the time to teach Charlie how to make muffins. It is evident how he strives to help and guide Charlie in his work.

The truth during the book is evident as he grows , in the aspect of friendship reationships . Because of his intellectual growth , he manages to begin to realize the taunts that are made about him . And to be able to get away from those people.

This first memory shows how Charlie has grown intellectually. Instead of having to be taught, his head can develop ideas and try them out for himself.

This second dialogue , evidences how charlie begins to develop ways , to increase production .

Report 9 :

In the memories section, report 9 has a bad memory of his childhood with his sister Norma, Charlie had tried to take Norma in his arms in the middle of the night to calm her down, but his mother yelled at him, hit him believing that he was going to hurt Norma and told him not to touch the baby again.

pg 39 paragraph 1 and 2

This shows us how his parents in Charlie's childhood, instead of teaching him to be careful and simply show that they do not trust him.

Another memory from Charlie's childhood is how his Uncle Herman protected him from bullies. This shows how there are family members who did care about Charlie and guided him through life.

Report 10 :

The principal in my dream had a long beard, and was floating around the room and pointing at me. "He'll have to go to a special school. Put him into the Warren State

Home and Training School. We can't have him here."

Put him into the Warren State Home and Training School.

This memory shows us how the school refuses to teach Charlie because of his learning difficulties.

This memory apart from giving us more context about charlie's life , shows us how charlie from going from fuzzy memories , manages to remember with clarity parts of his childhood.

- Charlie begins to understand the concept of the subconscious and conscious mind thanks to Dr. Strauss' explanations. His understanding of these concepts demonstrates an advancement in his intellectual maturity.

- Example: “He says it's the same thing and I have two minds. There's the subconscious and the conscious (that's how you spell it). And one don't tell the other one what its doing." pg 42.

April 9 Report:

- Charlie shows increasing emotional maturity as he becomes concerned about Robinson Crusoe's loneliness and the possibility of making friends. He also realizes that there are people who are not as good as he thought they were.

- Example: “I told her not to worry, Ms. Kinnian, that she wasn't smart yet and she laughed. .... But I think there must be someone else on the island because there's a picture with her funny umbrella looking at footprints.” pg 48.

- Charlie shows a lack of emotional understanding when he doesn't realize that his “friends” at the factory are making fun of him. However, he senses that something is not right.

- Example: “Everybody laffed and we had a good time and they gave me lots of drinks.... I dont know what that means but everybody likes me and we have fun." pg. 36

April 9 Report:

- Charlie begins to develop greater emotional intelligence as he realizes that his co-workers are not really his friends and that they laugh at him.

- Example: “It's a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me. Now I know what it means when they say 'to pull a Charlie Gordon.'" pg. 34

- Charlie remains humble about his abilities and his desire to improve. Despite his growing intelligence, he still sees himself as inferior.

- Example: “I told Dr Strauss what good is it to get smart in my sleep. I want to be smart when 1m awake." pg. 37

April 9 report:

- His humility is evident as he continues to work hard to learn to read and write better, and is proud of his small accomplishments.

- Example: “I asked her why. She said never mind but I shouldn't feel bad if I find out that everybody isnt nice like I think." pg 40.

Example: “I beat Algernon! I didn't even know I beat him until Burt, the tester, told me. The second time I lost because I got so excited I fell out of my chair before I finished. But after that I beat him 8 more times. I must be getting smart to beat a smart mouse like Algernon." Here, Charlie shows palpable pride in beating Algernon, the smarter mouse, indicating an increase in self-esteem and a hint of arrogance. pg. 36

Example: “I asked him if I could feed him because I felt bad about beating him and wanted to be nice and make friends. Burt said no Algernon is a very special mouse with an operation like mine, and he was the first of all the animals to stay smart that long. He told me Algernon is so smart that every day he has to solve a test to get his food. It's like a door lock that changes every time Algernon comes in to eat, so he has to learn something new to get his food. That makes me sad, because if he didn't learn, he would go hungry. I don't think it's right to make you take a test to eat. How would Dr. Nemur like to have to take a test every time he wants to eat?" In this passage, Charlie begins to develop a critical view of the conditions Algernon is subjected to, demonstrating a growing confidence in his own judgment. pg. 40

These examples show how Charlie, though initially humble and eager to learn, begins to develop a certain arrogance as his intelligence and understanding of the world increase.
