any school that does shift to virtual learning means students will log into Canvas and/or Seesaw for asynchronous learning at home independently. Teachers may provide materials for reading, videos to view, notes to study, assignments to complete, activities, assessments, or allow for independent work time. We believe this will allow our families as much flexibility as possible as students can log in and complete the daily assignments in a self-paced manner at any time during the day or evening.

Show them what your canvas page looks like and how to navigate it (even if they SHOULD know, not all of them will). Have a communication system in place (district email, Remind, etc.). Make sure they know when and how they can contact you if they need help. Give them an idea of what it'll look like: will it be videos? Nearpods? Articles to read? What will they be expected to do and/or turn in? Give time for Q&A as well. Some of your kids will be virtual learning pros, but many will need guidance.

Even though classes may be virtual, there are still ways of promoting and maintaining community in asynchronous learning! Shared Google Drive files like slides or docs can work as a "jigsaw" activity, where small groups of students can work together on a project/lesson and then "teach" other students through a virtual gallery walk. Canvas discussion boards work for this too-- especially if you make part of the assignment responding to peers' posts. If you need any help with the logistics of collaborative projects in virtual, especially if you're interested in using the Canvas Groups function (it's super cool), you can email Mx. Fellhauer at afellhauer@okcps.org

Give students choices for asynchronous assignments, such as letting them choose one assignment per category (say, for example, Grammar, Quick Writes, and Lesson Activities), and give them multiple COMPARABLE options to show you their understanding of the content (such as Google slides, a paragraph, a FlipGrid post, or a notes sheet/guide). Virtual learning can actually benefit kids if we let them use all these digital resources at our disposal to find their best way of communicating! Plus, this way students can do what they're able to given any other circumstances.
