March 1857 Dred Scott Decision Is Ruled

Dred Scott was a slave that had been taken into a few free states with his owner. His master passed away leaving his master's wife with the ownership rights to Scott. Scott wanted to sue his former-master's wife for his freedom. His argument was that when he entered a free state he should have become freed. Scott felt that the law should override the ownership rights of his master. This decision also made people realize that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional because it limited the rights of slave owners. The court ruled that Scott was not able to sue his master's wife because he was property. The South completely agreed with the ruling and the North did not like it at all because they felt that slaves should not be treated like this. This situation definitely increased sectionalism.

November 1860 Abraham Lincoln Elected as President

When Abraham Lincoln was elected, he got no electoral votes from the South. Everyone knew of his views on slavery. As the new president he did not immediately act on these beliefs because he wanted to please everyone. The South did not want him as the president because he was a threat to their ownership of slaves. This led to the first state secession from the union. Lincoln was the first republican president ever.
