However, I do not want to solely rely on technology as a form of instruction. Students, especially at the secondary level, spend over 9 hours on various forms of smart devices (smartphones, computers, video games, televisions, etc).  As an English teacher, I want my students to be comfortable using their voices. They need to communicate face-to-face with each other and other people, not just on a screen. Since the pandemic, students have been inhibited socially. Only 49% of students want face-to-face communication. This statistic jeopardizes communication outside of the digital world. Therefore, I want my students to understand how they can use technology purposefully.

However, with the spread of fake news and polarization, it is important to find a reliable source. At least 72% of adolescents believe they are being manipulated by their digital tool. In the classroom, teachers should make a point to demonstrate how to find, evaluate, and cite legitimate information. Also, integrating a rubric will assist students in understanding the expectations when using a digital tool.

A meaningful way students can use their digital citizenship is by advocating for causes important to them on a media platform. I want my students to know their voices in and outside of the classroom are important. Therefore, fostering their critical literacy skills, desire for social change, and the deconstruction of false media will make them productive members of their communities. There a multiple opportunities for this to happen in a classroom, especially an English classroom.
