Rowan is one of the two main protagonist. Rowan is intelligent, easy going, and fit. He wasn't happy with his home life when he felt like he wasn't seen by his parents. He encountered Scythe Faraday during school when he held the hand of a boy who was being gleaned. He meets Citra when they first become scythes apprentices. Rowan shows that he will die in order for Citra to live, showing that he is very compassionate.

The year is 2042 and the story is set in a time when humans have conquered death and disease, and are governed by artificial intelligence called the Thunderhead.

One type of conflict in the book is Man vs Man, where Rowan battles Goddard and whether he should like him or not. Rowan knows that Goddard is a bad person, but he slowly grows to like him because of the training and all the attention he is getting. Rowan is tied between purposely throwing the challenge to save Citra or to kill her and follow under Goddard's rein.

Citra is a teenage girl who was scouted by Scythe Faraday to make her his apprentice. She is a very smart and aggressive girl. She is not afraid to say her opinion and let a person know how she feels. Furthermore, she is put against Rowan to earn the scythe ring. Until Scythe Faraday's death was announced. Citra was then moved to Scythe Curie to be her apprentice. Citra was accused of Scythe Faraday's death and taken with Blade Control.

These could have included the school where Faraday gleaned Kohl and Rowan watched, Citras house, and Scythe Faraday house. Then it shifts over to the main conflict of Rowan changing because of his scythe. Citra doesn't know whether to trust Rowan or not. I think the biggest conflict that is happening is Citra getting taken into blade control for the accusation of killing Scythe faraday.

scythe Faraday is an interesting individual. At the beginning of the novel he acts as a sort of boogeyman before the two kids get to know him, he is scary and unstoppable. After the kids get to know him they almost become attached, learning under him and beginning to understand the different aspects of scythedom. Faraday has his own beliefs on how the job should be done and who should be allowed to do the job. He believes people who actually care about the lives they take should do it and they shouldn't want to.

The story takes place in a future North America called "mid-merica". This place is pretty much a utopia but people still work even though it is not required anymore because the thunderhead, future version of the cloud, takes care of mostly everything. Another interesting aspect about this place is that art and people are uninspired. Scythe Faraday says this is because without death looming over them it is much harder for people to find inspiration.

There are different conflicts within the book. The first conflict I would say is the conflict that neither of them want to be scythes and neither of them want to kill. Another conflict would be the fact that Rowan is changing under goddard and not in a good way. This puts the two in separate paths that are bound to collide. They eventually cross paths and fight in an event and rowan has to choose whether to let her win or to finish her quick.

Throughout reading Scythe, I have picked up a couple of possible themes, but there has been on that stood out. Because the story is about Scythes killing people because of the new technology they have, I think the main theme is living life to the fullest and not taking anything for granted. Since everyone has decided to be able to live for a long time, there needed to be something stopping that so the world would not be overpopulated. So a "natural cause" would be the scythes.

There are many other themes that appeared in this book. The theme of friendship and trust happened between Rowan and Citra as they had to leave each other after Scythe Faraday passed. Another theme could be forgiveness. After Rowan somewhat betrayed Citra she had to regain his trust and realize he was not the problem. Scythe Goddard convinced Rowan to act out and do things that were beyond his control.

One of the biggest Political message that stood out for me was AI and how in the book it was the governing system for the world. This shows that AI could play a huge part in the years and how it is advancing drastically. It was cool to get a glimpse of what the world could look like if the government was fully run by AI, an idea that is likely to happen in future years.

in the world of scythe we are introduced to a future where death is almost no longer an issue and people don't need to work but work just to pass the time. The thunderhead controls systems and government, it is the main governing body. The only other place that has any control is the scythedom and they only decide who dies. You could say that the world of scythe doesn't really have political debates about red or blue anymore, just an acceptance of the thunderhead.

One of the biggest themes in the book was mortality and life. This is a world where people can live hundreds of years without dying, people are more careless, and they don't try and reach any goals because they know they have so much time to do so. This really shows that people take life for granted in this story, and that they don't realize it until they are met with a scythe who gleans them.

Scythe explores many themes throughout its chapters some include; Love, the danger of stagnation, and the power of choice. Love is a recurring theme in this novel. Our two main protagonists, Citra and Rowan, do like each other but know that if they were to become Scythes then they could never be together. The danger of stagnation is an interesting one because it is more so about the entire world. Since the thunderhead there has been no innovation and humans lost the drive to be creative making art bland and uninspired. The power of choice. To me the power of choice in the world of Scythe is the only reason people still want to live. Since they are given some choices in life it makes it a little better.
