But women didn't agree at all, they protested for years and years! Until... FINALLY!!! on November 8th, 1910 with help from Susan B. Anthony & Abigail Scott Duniway, women got to vote in Washington state 10 years before the rest of the country. And today, women get to do more awesome stuff!

    5-24-17
My topic was the fight for Duwamish tribe recognition.
In 2002 Jan.19 the Duwamish were given federal recognition but less then 48 hours later George W. Bush suspended the recognition. The Duwamish tribe is currently suing the federal government for over 100 years of broken treaty promises. One reason that the federal government is not federally recognizing the Duwamish is because they supposedly have a ten year gap in records from 1915 to1925. There are more then 600 Duwamish tribe members, but sadly many of these members are leaving the tribe to go to federally recognized tribes. The Duwamish have been fighting hard for many years and we should stand with them in their fight.

     5-24-17
The Civil Rights movement was a defining moment in history, taking a big step toward equal rights for all. One of the key events that started the Civil Rights Movement was the Montgomery Bus Boycott, that lasted for over a year. The Montgomery Bus Boycott (Led by Rosa Parks) was a protest to have equal rights on buses. Also, Martin Luther King Jr. was a very famous Civil Rights leader, well known for conducting his “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963. Martin Luther King Jr. was making speeches and leading marches including the famous march from Selma to Montgomery that lasted for five days, until he was assassinated in 1968 while making a speech at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. Segregation was happening all over the country including in Seattle where there was something called the Racial Restrictive Covenants. This separated different parts of Washington into places where people with races other than white could or could not live there. People risked their lives for the Civil Rights Movement and in 1964, it was passed.

At first, a former US Army captain and fur trader named John Gantt guided the train for $1 a person. another person who helped was a missionary named Marcus Whitman. Marcus Whitman was on a misson to bring christyanity to people in Oregon, but the misson people said it was to hard, Marcus Whitman disagreed, he pressed on. for returning, he joined the "Wagon Train" at the Platte River. when the got to a rest stop, the people there said that the road was too rough and that they should use pack animals the rest of the way home. using pack animals means that you get a mule, horse, donkey, ect.) and tie your stuff on to your transportation. In the end, Marcus Whitman forged a way around Mount Hood which became Barlow Road.

FUN FACT!!!!
I go to Mount Hood every once and a while, and I go on Barlow Road.

Civil War
The Civil War was a war between the southern and the northern states, that is why it is called the Civil War. It went from 1861 to 1865.
The northern states wanted to end slavery and the southern wanted to keep it going. The northern states were called the union and the southern were called the confederate. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He was a white man but he thought slavery was unfair. Jefferson Davis was the president of the confederate states. Robert E. Lee was the last general of the confederate states. The first battle of the war was the battle of Fort Sumter. The confederate states ended up winning the battle of Fort Sumter. The battle of Antietam is known as the bloodiest battle in history. It happened on September 17th 1862. In the day approximately 23,000 men were either wounded, killed, or lost. The Battle of Gettysburg went from July 1st 1863 to July 3rd 1863. It is where Lincoln gave his famous speech the Gettysburg address. The Battle of Gettysburg resulted in a victory for the union. The war came to an end when Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9th 1865. The result was slavery being abolished. But just because slavery ended it didn't mean that segregation ended...
1. By that time there was so much smoke that it was hard to find the source of the fire. By this time the fire was out of control. the entire block from Madison to Marion was on fire. By the morning of June 7th the fire had burned 25 city blocks. Despite the magnitude of destruction, the rebuilding effort began quickly. new building effort resulted in a downtown build of brick and stone rather than wood. And the street levels were raised by 22 feet.

On December 7 1941 the Japanese airplanes bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. President Franklin D. Roosevelt was scared that Japanese Americans would work with the Japan armed forces even though they had no signs of suspicion so he ordered them to internment camps. Families only got six days notice, and when they got sent to the internment camps they could only bring what they could carry. There were over 120,000 people in 10 internment camps scattered out in the country. The families lived in single room tarpaper shacks. Multiple families would share one bathroom. There were schools inside the camps but they were crampedand didn't have any school supplies. After the war, they were freed but they didn't have homes or jobs because a lot of mean people had taken their farms and business and homes.

The Vietnam War started in north Vietnam because communism was starting to take hold. Fun fact: the Vietnam War's actual name is the second Indochina War. The Vietnam War was actually related to the Cold War. It was one of the bloodiest wars that probably has ever been fought. About 1,353,000 military deaths and two million civilian deaths. Two million and they were all innocents!!! The reason America got involved was because of the so called domino effect. The domino effect is if one country becomes a country of communists all the countries around it become communists. The war also used a lot of horrible weapons like Napalm which is an oil that burns very slowly and is very sticky. It also kills you very slowly and painfully. Another weapon like that is Agent orange which is a herbicide. It was used in the Vietnam War for making all the all the leaves fall off trees so that the enemy would have no cover. It can also lead to a wide variety of lung and blood cancers if inhaled. One of the worst parts of the Vietnam War were the massacres. Massacres are when soldiers come in and wipe out a city or village of civilians. In the end the communists won the war. In the picture below it shows women and children seconds before they were killed in a massacre.

The Great Depression was a hard time for many. In Seattle you can see we have homeless people and most of them don't have jobs. All those people here in Seattle who don't have jobs, that only equals to less than 5%. In the Great Depression over 25% were unemployed. There could be 6 people living in a shed like house only as big as your regular garden shed. There were neighborhoods of these tiny shed Like Houses. These were called Hoovervilles. They all had little food. Even children were going hungry and Starving. This all happened in 1933 through 1937. Even President Roosevelt was worried. This was a time he said the quote the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Before that there was a stock market crash which took 27 years to reach pre-crash levels. I suspect that is one of the reasons the Great Depression happened. Fun fact, before the Great Depression happened there were twenty-five thousand banks in 1933 almost half had failed. President Roosevelt's spent his first 100 days in office trying to talk to the people and to get rid of their distress. This was one of the hardest times in American history. Seattle was was hit hard at this time. The great Seattle Fire had only happened about 30 years ago and they had many Hoovervilles. When I look over those photos I still feel the sadness and the pain and the hunger. That was a true crisis in American history. I hope that the that America remembers that time and it will never happen again. This whole thing was four years long.

During this time the holocaust killed many people, including 1.5 million children. The United States did not get involved in the war until after the very sad Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. June 6, 1944 Normandy Beach was invaded by the Allies and is now known as the largest sea to land attack. The United States dropped a nuclear bomb on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in September 1944. April 30, 1945 the leader of Germany, Adolf Hitler, commited suicide. These last two events led to the end of the war in 1945.

Almost all of these marches were organized by Tamika D. Linda Sarsour is another important member she is Muslim American and works on racial justice and civil rights. The women's march is an exceptional thing that I got to experience, and I am lucky that I got to go to the march in Seattle, I will never forget it and I hope that the Women's Marches will never be forgotten.

My topic is the 2011 Japanese tsunami. It all started Friday, March 11, 2011 at 2:46 pm. It was a normal day in Tōhoku, Japan. People where shopping, riding bikes and going to school. Suddenly there was shaking from a MAGNITUDE-9 earthquake. A magnitude-9 earthquake is massive and can annihilate buildings. This was very unlikely to happen in Tōhoku. The gigantic earthquake's shock was felt in most places around the world, from Norway's fjords to Antarctica's ice sheets. The earthquake's vibrations bounced off the other continents and came back to Japan unleashing the savage tsunami. When the tsunami arrived it flipping over cars and smashing through buildings. It had killed 15,891 people and most of it was from drowning and the impact of being hit by the tsunami itself. 6,152 people were dangerously injured and 2,562 people are still missing. The tsunami regurgitated boats and fractions of other wrecked things into to the city. So if you fell in all the regurgitated items would make nearly impossible to get out unless you could use those regurgitated objects to possibly climb out. Yet otherwise they will block your exit for getting out of the water. The waves flooded the entire area and toss boats in the city. The waves were so strong they would carry away houses and take down sky scrapers. The tsunami had super thick and tall waves reaching over 130ft in height. If you thought you would be able to drive out of a situation like this. The waves move way faster than cars and regurgitated items would throw you of course and you'd probably hit a running elderly. There was even fire, and well you might think how could there be fire in a tsunami. Well after the tsunami settled, houses broke into flames because of the insane impact of the tsunami hitting them. One of the most detrimental things is when the earthquake erupted and it shut down a nuclear power plant's fission controls and they started a meltdown and they overheated rapidly. When the tsunami hit it tore apart the emergency generators which were needed to cool down the overheating nuclear reactors. The nuclear reactors melted through the metal walls and blew up the building. It had started a radioactive leak. The tsunami also destroyed most of the power plant itself which meant controlling the radiation would be even harder rebuilding the power plant would take years. Around 1,600 people painful died from cancer due to being exposed in radiation!

For the 2016 presidential election, there were 6 candidates for the Democratic Party (Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, Lincoln Chafee, Jim Webb, and Lawrence Lessig). And for the Republican Party there were 17 candidates (Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Ted Cruz, Carly Fiorina, Jim Gilmore, Lindsey Graham, Mike Huckabee, Bobby Jindal, John Kasich, George Pataki, Rand Paul, Rick Perry, Marco Rubio, Rick Santorum, Scott Walker). The two parties were divided for the debates. The first debate was a republican debate, on August 6, 2015. The first Democratic debate was on October 6, 2015. After the Republican primaries Donald Trump had won the most votes, at around 14million. Trump was a businessman, CEO of the Trump Organization, and had no experience in politics. For the Democrats, Hillary got about 16.8 million votes to Bernie Sanders' 13.2. Hillary was the first female to get the presidential nominee, and was Secretary of State before the election. The final election was the two nominees from each party trying to win. There were three debates between Hillary and Trump, starting on September 26 2016 and ending on October 29 2016. Then, on November 8 came the final election to decide who will go into office on January 20, 2017. The voting system for the final election is called the electoral collage. This is where instead of having each person’s vote counts as one, each state has a number of electoral votes and whichever candidate gets the most votes in that state gets the state’s electoral votes. The first candidate to get 270 electoral votes will be the president. Also there is a popular vote, (which does not have an impact on who is president) which is just the individual person’s vote. After all of the polls were counted they revealed that Hillary Clinton had won the popular vote winning 65,844,610 votes, but Donald Trump won the Electoral College winning 304 electoral votes to Hillary’s 227. Now Donald Trump is America’s 45th president. I highly encourage you to vote in the 2020 presidential election (If you can).

Photographers loved the way looked and loved to take pictures of it's because of how perfect it was and how symmetrical it was and how Spirit lake made it look stunning. That was before the eruption. The blast was so powerful it knocked down trees from 17 miles away! The day before the eruption Mount Saint Helens was the fifth highest mountain in Washington. After the eruption it was the 13th highest. 57 people were dead. The Mount Saint Helens eruption also caused a very horrifying landslide that knocked out a whole town! The ash from the eruption reached into 4 whole States. Sadly it is very likely that it will erupted again in the next 100 through 300 years. it's really depressing.

Mount Vesuvius, a volcano near the Bay of Naples in Italy, is hundreds of thousands of years old and has erupted more than 50 times. it is the most famous eruption took place in the year 79 A.D.,(after christ) when the volcano buried the ancient Roman city of Pompeii under a thick carpet of volcanic ash. Two thousand people died, and the city was abandoned for many years. When a group of explorers rediscovered the site in 1748 they were surprised to find that–underneath a thick layer of dust and debris–Pompeii was mostly still there. The buildings, artifacts and skeletons left behind in the buried city. This has taught us a great deal about everyday life in the ancient world.

The Trojan War
The Trojan war was fought over 3,000 years ago. It was fought between the Spartans and the Trojans. The Trojan war was fought because Queen Helen of Sparta was abducted by the Trojan prince Paris. The Spartans went to Troy to get Helen back and the war was fought in Troy. The Spartans won when they left a giant wooden horse outside of the walls of Troy. The Trojans pulled the horse inside their gates. At night, the Spartans jumped out of the horse and fought the Trojans from inside the impenetrable walls. The Trojan war lasted over 10 years.

The Cold War occurred right after world war 2 and it was supposedly fought between the USSR and America. The truth is that there was no direct combat between the USSR and the USA. It was fought because of how we ran our governments. Our government was democratic and the USSR was communistic. The Cold War also gave birth to probably the most dangerous age in the world -- the Atomic Age. The Atomic Age was related to the arms race. The arms race was a time when the USA and the USSR were developing a lot of nuclear weaponry. At the time there were a lot of civil wars going on like the Vietnam war and the Chinese civil war. In most of these wars the USA supported the anti communist side and the USSR supported the communist side. Probably the biggest part of the Cold War was the Cuban missile crisis. That was when the USA sent a spy plane to observe cuban activity and we found an intercontinental ballistic missile that could carry a nuclear payload and had a range of about 2,200 miles. If they were launched from Cuba they could have hit many big cities in the USA. Then came the bay of the pigs invasion which was a total failure. When anticommunist cubans came to America, the American government had tried to support a counter-revolution by flying them to Cuba's Bay of the Pigs. Its called that because of the pirates that were there were referred to as pigs or filthy swine. What happened on the bay of the pigs invasion was the jeeps landed without any fuel and the American backed cubans were destroyed. But Despite this failure the Cold War ended with victory of the USA because we won the space and arms race and the USSR completely collapsed in 1991 due to some other problems.

P.S I don't give dates because there was no clear ending.

9/11 happened on September 11, 2001 16 years ago. It was a sad time in world history. In this time al-Qaeda terrorists staged four attacks on the United States, using airplanes. Two of the planes, flight 11 and flight 175 were crashed into the world trade center tower, at different times. Flight 11 crashed at 8:46 in the north tower. Flight 175 crashed at 9:03 in the south tower. Flight 77 was crashed into the pentagon at 9:37AM. The fourth plane, flight 93 was supposed to crash toward Washington DC but ended up crashing into a field in Stonycreek township, Pennsylvania at 10:07 AM. The attacks killed 2,996 people and injured 6,000 others. The buildings cost $750 million to clean up, and it took one year to do it. The head of the al -Qaeda terrorists, Osama Bin Laden was found and killed in 2011 by the navy seals. This tragic day known as 9/11 is recognized with many memorial locations. These include the memorial in New York, the pentagon memorial, and the memorial in Pennsylvania. President George W. bush delivered this address from the Oval office: "Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cant touch the foundation of America."

The levees broke and the poor neighborhoods flooded. People waited on their roofs for days hoping to be rescued. The people who were rescued were taken to the superdome, but there was not food and water for them. There were a ton of rumors, the rumors included that there was a jailbreak and a bunch of people were shooting at rescue helicopters. And lots of people believed the rumors, which was a big problem because less rescuers would come in because they were scared that they were going to get shot at.
